2015 Monday Morning Mets Minors Players of the Week #1

The Mets 2014 First Round Pick is off to a great start to his pro career

April 9-19, 2015

Keeping track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system throughout the season. I didn’t do this post last weekend because there wasn’t a full weeks worth of data to use, so I will include all season-to-date stats here, and then one week windows moving forward.

Hitter of the Week: Michael “Get me out of the FSL ASAP” Conforto is off to a torrid start, leading the FSL in HR’s, RBI’s and SLG, and second in walks, runs scored, and OPS. By looking too good for A+, he’s proving the scouts who suggested he could start in AA correct. If he keeps this up, the question becomes how soon until Sandy & co. decides to promote him to the B-Mets.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: There were some very strong early performances from starters adjusting to new leagues in 2015, but the eye-opening performances came from a pair of righties in the Binghamton rotation: Luis Cessa and Seth Lugo. Both faced one over the minimum in their first start of the season, showing excellent command of their low-to-mid-90’s heat (Cessa topped out at 96 MPH in his starts, Lugo at 95 MPH in his one start).
Relief Pitcher of the Week: Hansel Robles has been impressive since he moved to the pen with Binghamton last season, but he started this year on fire with Las Vegas, so the Mets appear to be adding a great relief option to their bullpen. His best pitch is a mid-90’s fastball that was reaching 98 MPH this past week and was rated a 65/70 pitch by fangraphs this past offseason. He also features a nice hard slider that has potential to be above average and a changeup that is presently an average offering. This past week I noticed him using the quick pitch and varying his time to home with the bases empty, which is something he worked on with the Mets in spring training no doubt.
Team of the Week: Just looking at team record, no team stood out this past week, but the St. Lucie Mets roster is full of players off to great starts in 2015, and some of the top prospects aren’t even listed this week.
