Recap

Rafael Montero was effective early and Travis Taijeron led an offensive outburst from the 51s that was just enough to beat the Reno Aces Thursday night. The 51s jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Taijeron’s 5th homerun of the season in the 1st, and then never looked back. Montero hit a road bump while facing the lineup for a second time in the 4th, but went out on a high note with a clean 5th. John Church was the first to relieve Montero, and he looked as good as I’ve seen him over his first two innings, but things fell apart for him when Wally sent him out for a third inning. Chase Bradford would relieve Church with two on and nobody out in the 8th, allowing both runners to score before settling down to close things out for Las Vegas.
Montero was still sitting in the upper-80’s/low-90’s with his fastball, but had his signature excellent command on display throughout, which was enough for him to get through the lineup once with little problem. The only hit off Montero the first time through the order was a solo blast from the leadoff man, and then Rafa set down 9 Aces batters in a row. But Reno had made their adjustments to Montero for the second time through the lineup, as 5 of the first 6 batters reached on base hits against him in the 4th – single, RBI triple, RBI single, strikeout, single, RBI single. He stopped relying on his fastball by the end of the inning, throwing almost entirely off-speed and breaking pitches to the last couple of batters. Montero would bounce back for a 1-2-3 5th, but a 20+ pitch 4th inning had pushed him to his 75-pitch limit, so the 51s had to extend their pen again.
The other big news of the night was that Noah Syndergaard is sick enough that he won’t pitch Friday night, so Steven Matz will get the start instead. No announcement on when Syndergaard will get back into the rotation, but Matz will be on schedule, as he piggy-backed with Montero this past Sunday.

Scoring Highlights

After drawing a one-out walk, Darrell Ceciliani would come home on this Johnny Monell single. Travis Taijeron followed with a two-run monster shot to right-center field that made it a 3-0 lead.

Dilson Herrera picked up his first hit of the night with Rafael Montero on 1B in the 2nd, but the next three 51s batters were retired in short order.

Taijeron led off the 3rd inning with this single lined into LF. A Brandon Allen force out would erase Taijeron, but Allen would come around to score on an RBI single from Montero, which was his second hit of the night.

Monell lined a blast just over the LF wall with two outs in the 4th. Taijeron followed with his third hit of the night, and came in to score on a double from Allen.

Even the announcer didn't realize this left

Kyle Johnson led off the 5th with a double, and would come around to score on a sac fly from Darrell Ceciliani.

Johnson led off the 7th inning and again came around to score on a sac fly from Ceciliani. Dilson Herrera picked up his second hit of the night to move Johnson to 3B.
