Recap:

The biggest Mets related news of the game was that Daniel Muno was removed so he could be promoted to the majors. Best of luck to Mr. Muno, who I think makes a lot of sense on the Mets bench, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he is back with Las Vegas when David Wright is ready to come back. The game itself was a pitching duel through the first 5 innings, but the 51s would break the game open with 6 runs between the 6th and 8th innings. The 51s took the lead in the 3rd when Darrell Ceciliani came around to score after a lead off double. Darin Gorski did what Darin Gorski does over 5 innings – about a hit allowed per inning, few walks, mistakes get hit hard – although his strikeouts were down a little. The hardest hit mistake resulted in a two-run homerun for Adam Duvall in the 4th, his third of the year, which gave Sacramento a temporary 2-1 lead. Matt Reynolds provided the big hit for Las Vegas in the 6th, when he matched his major league counter part Wilmer Flores with a three-run homerun of his own. The lead would prove more than enough for the 51s bullpen, although Sacramento was able to tack on a run in the 8th and 9th inning. The 9th inning was a frustrating one for the 51s apparent closer Cody Satterwhite, who allowed a run on three weakly hit infield singles to start the frame. Matt Reynolds nearly made a top-notch defensive play on the first grounder, using his bare hand as he charged a grounder behind the mound, but his throw was too wide for Alex Castellanos, who had only played 10 games at 1B coming into this game – note, I’m not saying a better first baseman definitely keeps his foot on the bag, but a taller one might (Alex is 6’0”). The next batter hit a grounder up the middle that Dilson Herrera would’ve at least knocked down, but the ball bounced off the 2B bag, over Dilson’s head and into shallow CF for a single that put runners on the corners. Even if Dilson can’t get an out on the play, just knocking that ball down would’ve kept the runner at 2B, and he wouldn’t have scored on the weak groundout to 2B that followed – hit so slowly the could only get the out at 2B. Satterwhite looked frustrated at this point, as any pitcher might after allowing a run on three weak grounders, and he walked the next batter on 5 pitches. After Frank Viola came out for a quick talk – probably to remind him that beat the first 3 batters, but the ball bounced in their favor – Satterwhite retired the final two hitters to close out the series in a split. The 51s have their home opener Friday night at 10:05, with Tyler Pill taking the hill against Fresno.

Scoring Highlights

Dilson Herrera hit a one-out single in the 1st, and then stole 2B on a delayed steal with two outs, but would be stranded.

Darrell Ceciliani led off the 3rd with his second double of the season. He’d advance to 3B on a Gorski sac bunt and score after a failed pickoff attempt at 3B.

Wilfredo Tovar made this great defensive play at 3B in the 4th.

Slo Mo

Tovar and Dilson Herrera lined singles into the OF to start the top of the 6th, and then Matt Reynolds provided the big hit of the night with this homerun to LF (third gif below). The inning ended on the craziest catch I’ve ever seen a pitcher make.

Mets SS by the end of 2015?

Are you kidding me?

Darrell Ceciliani would use his legs to create another run in the 7th after hitting this leadoff single back up the middle. Wally would send Hansel Robles up to bat in a bunting situation – and he has the reputation of a manager who likes to bunt, for example, he once had Wilmer Flores lay down a bunt from the 3-hole – and had him swinging away over the first 3 pitches. Somehow the pitcher fell behind 2-0 before Robles took a big hack at the 3rd pitch, so it looked like the bunt was definitely off. But then they used the rare bunt-and-run to perfection, as Ceciliani never hesitated going for 3B, causing the first baseman Duvall to rush his throw, which ended up in the stands.

In the 8th, Matt Reynolds hit a one-out single and Alex Castellanos followed with this blast to left-center field.

Admire your power Mr. Castellanos

Pitching Coverage

Gorski struck out Duvall to end a two-out threat in the 1st, stranding runners on 1B and 2B.

Gorski ended a 1-2-3 3rd with a strikeout of Ehire Adrianza.

Hansel Robles continued his strong start in the 51s, striking out 4 in a row before allowing a single and being replaced for a Scott Rice LOOGY opportunity. Notice how he was alternating how fast he was to the plate, and that he used the quick pitch to help catch the batter off guard for his second K.
