Recap:

Cory Mazzoni was great over 6 very efficient innings Friday night, but the Albuquerque Isotopes came back against the 51s bullpen late to win 9-6. Mazzoni was fun to watch, as he worked ahead in the count and mixed up his pitches very effectively throughout the start. Both of his secondary offerings were very effective against Albuquerque, and he ended up with ten strikeouts on the night. Mazzoni didn’t really make a mistake until the 6th inning, when a first-pitch fastball was deposited over the fences in RF with two outs. He was close to getting out of his most stressful inning of the night, but instead gave back two of the three runs the 51s had tacked on in the top of the frame. Still, Las Vegas got one run right back and held a 6-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 7th. The Isotopes would scratch together a run off of Lannan in the 7th and then five off of Gonzalez Germen in the 8th, on two homeruns.

Recap:

Noah Syndergaard was very sharp but ran into some long innings on this Sunday afternoon, as the Las Vegas 51s took game three of four against the Bees. Salt Lake would score an unearned run in the 1st thanks to a throwing error from Matt Reynolds. Syndergaard had retired the first two batters before walking Ian Stewart. Brennan Boesch would follow with a grounder to Reynolds that was thrown wide up the RF line, allowing Stewart to come around and score. The 51s bounced back for a run on three singles to start the bottom of the 1st. Syndergaard made quicker work of the 2nd, mixing in his curveball at a much higher rate. The 51s took their first lead in the bottom of the 2nd, with Cesar Puello providing the legs of the run. Puello would hit a one-out double down the LF line, steal 3B, and then scored on a well-placed bunt from Anthony Seratelli. Syndergaard had his only 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, and he was mixing in all three pitches really well during the frame. The Bees managed two singles off of Thor in the 4th, but he continued to mix up his pitches well and worked around the trouble. The 5th was a long inning for Thor, but he was again able to limit damage, and he only allowed one hit in the inning. The hit was a leadoff double from Vance Albitz, who would come around to score on a groundout two batters later. Miguel Socolovich looked good relieving Thor in the 6th, but he was unable to retire any of the four batters he’d face in the 7th, when the Bees surged to a 5-3 lead. However, Matt Reynolds would make up for any earlier problems in the bottom of the frame when he launched a three-run bomb to LF. Erik Goeddel and Chase Bradford kept the Bees scoreless the rest of the way, assuring the 51s a split at minimum for the series.

Recap:

Noah Syndergaard put in one of his best performances of the season, as he charges to the finish line looking as good as he has in 2014. In his penultimate start of the PCL regular season, Thor brought one of his best fastballs to the game, averaging 96.7 MPH (per the Cashman Field scoreboard velocities) and topping out at 99 MPH on several occasions towards the end of his outing. He would leave with two on and two outs in the 7th, as he reached or was nearing his pitch limit for the night. The 51s offense exploded for five runs on three extra bases hits in the 2nd, highlighted by Kevin Plawecki’s first homerun of the night and Matt Reynolds 15th double with Las Vegas. Plawecki added another homerun leading off the 5th, providing a nice answer to the run Round Rock had scored in the top half of the inning. Erik Goeddel looked good striking out Ryan Strausborger to bail Thor out in the top of the 7th, but then ran into trouble in the 8th, when Miguel Socolovich had to come in for the final out. Chase Bradford struck out the side in the 9th, putting the Las Vegas pitchers K total for the game at 16.
