Recapish
The Columbia Fireflies second half
got off on a wrong foot Thursday night at home, as the Intimidators took advantage
of some wild pitching in the 5th to jump ahead and take the opener
of this series 8-5. Cola’s pitching was on point for most of the night, as they
set a franchise record with 17 strikeouts (out of 41 batters faced), Blake
Taylor set a career high with eight strikeouts, and recent Indy ball import
Matt Pobereyko struck out the side in his debut. But Taylor lost control of his
stuff as he neared 100 pitches, allowing three of the final four batters he
faced to reach on a HBP and two walks. Jacob Zanon was a smash in his return to
the Cola lineup, and Tim Tebow was a bit of a sparkplug with two doubles from
the bottom of the order, but the Fireflies comeback efforts came up a little
short.
He
did have a one-inning relief stint right before the All-Star break, but
Taylor’s last two starts have come with nine days of rest between them. Control
has been his issue all season, and it burped its way up again in the 5th
last night, but Taylor was throwing strikes at a nice 65% rate before the 5th
inning started. He started his night with back-to-back strikeouts of Tyler
Sullivan and Mitch Roman as part of a very quick 1st.
Jacob
Zanon was very hot for the first few games of this season, but then a
concussion knocked him out and Thursday was his first night back with Columbia
(he did make one rehab start for Brooklyn). His big night started with a
leadoff single in the 1st. He went to third on an Andres Gimenez
single and then came around to score on a double play.
Taylor
would strike out three in the 2nd, but Sam Dexter gave them a 2-0
lead with a two out single through the left side. Micker Adolfo started the
frame with his 21st double of the season, which opened the door for
the big inning. Zach Remillard, Grant Massey and Tyler Sullivan were Taylor’s
strikeout victims during the frame.
Ali
Sanchez connected for his single in the 2nd. Tim Tebow hit a
one-hopper into left fielder that falls in for a single 99.999% of the time,
but went for a force out in this case because Jay Jabs (walk) had to hold up
halfway between second and third, and he ended up forced out at third. Also shown below is Luis Carpio's single from the third.
Taylor
made it seven straight set down with perfect frames during the 3rd
and 4th innings. He got revenge against Adolfo with a strikeout to
end the 3rd, and then started the 4th with back-to-back
strikeouts of Brandon Dulin and Remillard (again).
Luis
Carpio committed his eighth error of the season to start the 5th,
and Taylor wasn’t able to get a fourth out in the frame to pick up his
teammate. Who knows how the inning would’ve gone without the error, but he was
missing badly by the end of his outing. Manager Jose Leger came out to get him
with the bases loaded and just two runs in, but Adam Atkins came in and allowed
back-to-back singles to make it a 7-1 game. He’d finish the top of the 5th
with a strikeout of Casey Schroeder, but the major damage had already been
done.
Leading
off the bottom of the 5th with a chance to add an “overcome that
obstacle” moment to his list, Tim Tebow responded to the Intimidators
intimidating 5-run 5th with a hustle double. Zanon knocked him in
with a single to CF two batters later to make it a 7-2 game. Gimenez followed
with his second hit of the game, and since Zanon sped over and beat a throw to
third on the single to left, Gimenez was able to move up into scoring position
on the play as well. Unfortunately, the Fireflies 3-4 batters went down
swinging to end the frame.
Atkins
added his second strikeout of the night in a quick 6th.
Matt
Pobereyko was signed by the Mets out of the Frontier League this past week and
officially assigned to the Columbia Fireflies yesterday, although he had
already been there for two days. He pitched for the Diamondbacks as an
undrafted free agent last year, but they released him at the end of the season.
He’s a self-described
“fastball pitcher,” who mixes in a slider and splitter, and is, “aggressively
attacking hitters all the time.” This report from two
years ago says his fastball was up to 94 MPH during a complete-game
no-hitter with 18 strikeouts. After 38 K: 5 BB in 18 IP with a Frontier
League team this season, Pobereyko started his Mets franchise by striking
out the side in the 7th.
Tebow
came through with his second leadoff double of the game in the 7th (his
14th double overall), and again Zanon knocked him in. But this time
it wasn’t a single but a two run homer that got out in a hurry to make this a
7-4 game. Kannapolis then gifted Columbia a fifth run in a very weird set of
events. Gimenez reached second base on a strikeout (thanks to a wild pitch and
E2), went to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an E5.
Joseph
Zanghi took over for Columbia in the 8th and struck out four during
his two innings of work.
After
Kannapolis gifted Columbia that run in the 7th, they retired the final
eight Fireflies batters of the game to take the opener. These two teams go at
it again Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Harol Gonzalez (4-4, 4.11 ERA) scheduled
to start for the Columbia Fireflies.
