Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s took an extra inning loss to the Salt Lake Bees on Thursday
afternoon, losing for the third time in the four game series even though they
held a lead late in each game. Blake Beavan returned to the 51s rotation for
this start and he was shaky over 5+ but left with a 3-2 lead in the 6th.
The score remained that way until Hansel Robles allowed an RBI double to Ramon
Flores in the 8th. After missed opportunities with the bases loaded
from both sides over the next two innings, the Bees finally broke through for a
walkoff win in the 11th – Rey Navarro provided the walkoff hit this
time.
Brandon
Nimmo led the game off with an infield single but was erased in the 1st
on a rare double play grounder off the bat of Amed Rosario.
The
Bees jumped ahead 1-0 on three singles in the bottom of the 1st –
Navarro started and ended his day with an RBI single. The 51s turned a 4-6-3
double play to help Beavan through the inning.
Travis
Taijeron connected for his 15th double of the season leading off the
2nd but was stranded at third in the frame.
The
51s turned another double play in the 3rd, this time it went 6-4-3
and came after the first two Bees batters reached on singles.
Dominic
Smith pulled his 16th double of the season into the RF corner in the
4th inning, but the 51s couldn’t even get him to third in the frame.
Las
Vegas finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 5th. Gavin
Cecchini took a HBP leading off the frame and then came around to score on a
two base fielding error by third baseman Kaleb Cowart – Carrillo hit a grounder
that went under his glove. With two outs in the frame, top Mets prospects Amed
Rosario and Dominic Smith connected for back-to-back RBI singles to make it a
3-1 game.
Michael
Bourn had a big day for Salt Lake, reaching base four times and scoring a pair
of runs. He worked a walk leading off the bottom of the 5th and
eventually came around to score and make it a 3-2 game.

The
51s offense would go quiet until the 9th, and their failure to add
an insurance run came back to bite them when the Bees tied the game in the 8th.
Robles bounced back to strikeout the final two batters of the 8th,
and then struck out Cowart in the 9th as he quickly retired the
first two. But then old Hansel came back again, as he issued a HBP and two
walks to load the bases. The game went to extras, so he clearly escaped the
jam, but it became another frustrating inning for Hansel.
By
the way, Gavin Cecchini singled for that 9th inning 51s offense that
I mentioned. Amed Rosario added a single in the 10th, and a pair of
walks around that single loaded the bases for Las Vegas, but they couldn’t come
up with a two out RBI hit to take the lead.
Logan
Taylor worked a perfect 10th for Las Vegas. The 11th did
not go as well. Cowart doubled with one out in the frame and then came home on
the Navarro single two batters later.
After
dropping three of four in Salt Lake, the Las Vegas 51s long road trip moves to
Tacoma for a weekend series with the Rainiers. They’ll give the ball to Ricky
Knapp (2-6, 5.24 ERA) in the opener, with game time scheduled for 10:05 PM ET.
