Recapish
Las
Vegas cruised to an 8-0 lead behind Tyler Pill Monday night, only to see the
Rainiers charge back against the 51s pen and take the series opener 9-8. The
51s had a power outburst against Rainiers starter Chase De Jong, launching
three doubles and three homers against him over his 5.1+ IP. Pill took a
shutout into the 6th, but then Tacoma hit a pair of homers against
him before he left, and another homer against Logan Taylor in the 7th.
They completed the comeback with Alberto Baldonado on the mound, who has had
trouble adjusting to Triple-A this year.
The
51s took a 3-0 lead on three solo homers during the first two innings. Victor
Cruzado and Matt Reynolds went back-to-back to start the game, and then Travis
Taijeron led off the 2nd with his twelfth homer of the season.
Pill
allowed a leadoff double in both the 1st and 2nd innings,
but he was a little strikeout happy early Monday night, and three strikeouts
plus two groundouts and a pop out helped him work around those base runners.
The
51s first base runner came when Cruzado led off the 3rd with his
third double of the season. Cruzado eventually came around on a well-struck
Amed Rosario sac fly to make this a 4-0 game. Dominic Smith and Kevin Plawecki
followed with singles.
Pill
worked back-to-back perfect frames in the 3rd and 4th
innings, pushing his streak to nine straight set down, and adding three more
strikeouts along the way. His streak was broken when Tyler Smith led off the 5th
with a single through the middle, but then Pill bounced back to retire the next
three in order, striking out Danny Muno for his seventh K of the game along the
way.
Las
Vegas appeared to put an exclamation point on this game when they extended
their lead to 8-0 in the 6th. Smith, Plawecki, and Taijeron started
the inning with singles to load the bases, and then a Jayce Boyd sac fly
brought home Dom Smith. Somehow Tacoma’s starter was still out there at this
point, and the next two 51s batters took advantage for back-to-back doubles.
Gavin Cecchini’s double brought home Plawecki, and then Phillip Evans made it
8-0 with a two run double.
Pill
entered the 6th with just 75 pitches thrown but hit a road bump
during the frame. He allowed homers to Tyler O’Neill (solo) and Andrew Aplin
(2R), but still left with an 8-3 lead. He held the Rainiers to 4-19 with 7 K
over the first five innings; it was just that third time through the lineup
that got him.
This
game can basically be split into two separate games, one during which the 51s
dominated Tacoma’s starter 8-0, and another when the Rainier’s dominated a
tired Tyler Pill and the Las Vegas pen. Logan Taylor allowed a two run homer
with two outs in the 7th, and both of those outs came on strikeouts.
Alberto Baldonado took over with two on and one out in the 8th and
allowed back-to-back RBI hits before eventually ending the frame. Tyler O’Neill
connected on a two out RBI single into CF to push Tacoma ahead 9-8 just before
the finish line.
The
51s bats went down quietly as they watched the lead dwindle away. The final
eight Las Vegas batters were retired in a row, and it wasn’t pretty: there were
six strikeouts and a pop out.
After
an gross loss in the opener, the 51s hope to get that bad taste out of their
mouth with a win behind Donovan Hand (1-3, 6.99 ERA) Tuesday night. Game time
is scheduled for 9:05 PM ET, and the 51s will be facing Andrew Moore (3-1, 3.19
ERA).
