Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s lost a laugher in their opener with Tacoma Friday night, failing
to capitalize on several scoring opportunities after their starter Ricky Knapp
put them in a big hole. Knapp did not have his best stuff and was missing up,
which is never a good idea in the PCL. Down just 2-0, Knapp retired the first
two batters of the 3rd inning but then couldn’t get the third out.
He’d faced seven more batters before Beck Wheeler finally came in to finish the
frame. The 51s pen was fairly effective over the final five innings, but the
bats couldn’t come up with a big hit against Tacoma starter Andrew Moore.
Dominic
Smith picked up the 51s first hit of the game in the 1st, lining a
two out single into CF.
Knapp
actually worked a perfect 1st, but was then greeted with a D.J.
Peterson homer in the 2nd. Ryan Jackson doubled home a run later in
the Tacoma 3rd, which made it a 2-0 game.
Brandon
Nimmo connected for his eleventh double of the season with two outs in the 3rd
– he has ten doubles, one triple and two homers over his last 103 PA.
Andrew
Aplin provided the biggest hit of the Tacoma 3rd when he tripled
home the first three runs of the frame. Beck Wheeler came in and struck out
Leonys Martin to end the frame. Wheeler added a strikeout of Tyler O’Neill in
the 4th and Ryan Jackson in the 5th.
The
51s connected for an extra base hit in the 4th, 5th, and
6th innings, but struck out for every out that followed those extra
base hits. Travis Taijeron doubled with two outs ahead of a Desmond Jennings
strikeout in the 4th. Gavin Cecchini tripled to start the 5th,
but then the next three went down swinging. And Amed Rosario doubled leading
off the 6th, but again the next three went down swinging.
Wheeler
finally ran into trouble in the 6th and Alberto Baldonado had to
come into a bases loaded situation and bail him out. Baldonado allowed a pair
of loud outs to LF, but both went for outs, and the ninth run that came home on
a sac fly didn’t make a difference in this games outcome. Nimmo made a fantastic catch at the wall for the first out.
Jennins
and Victor Cruzado singled in the 51s 7th.
Kevin
McGowan worked the 8th for Las Vegas and the 51s turned a nice
double play behind him to erase an E5.
After
taking another tough loss, the 51s fell to 14 games under .500 – the Rainiers
are now 12 games over .500. These two continues this series Saturday night at
10:05 PM ET, with Sean Gilmartin (1-2, 7.31 ERA) scheduled to start for the
51s.
