Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies evened their series in Hartford thanks to a huge
effort from their starter Corey Oswalt. Oswalt did everything short of
completing his start Tuesday night in Hartford, striking out six over 6.2
scoreless innings and leaving with a 1-0 lead that he provided for himself when
he launched a solo blast in the 6th. The game was a pitcher’s duel
throughout and the Binghamton pen did not let Oswalt down, as they retired the
final seven batters of the game consecutively in relief of the 23-year old
righty.
Oswalt
allowed ten base runners, so it’s not like he was cruising in this start, but
he had good defense behind him and was able to get some key outs, including
strikeouts to end the 3rd and 4th innings with runners in
scoring position. Stadium gun was a little hot, but it looked like he was
low-90’s with his heater throughout much of the start, which is where he’s
needed to be to have success this year. Hartford surely would’ve scored at
least one run over the first two innings if not for the fine defensive efforts
from Champ Stuart in CF.
David
Thompson reached for a single to extend his hit streak to eleven games (4 2B, 4
HR, 1.225 OPS during) in the 2nd, but it led to nothing for
Binghamton.
Oswalt
sandwiched both the 3rd and 4th innings with strikeouts:
Omar Carrizales, Brian Mundell, Dom Nunez, and Ryan Castellani. In between, he
allowed a two out double and stolen base in the 3rd, and Hartford
loaded the bases against him with one out in the 4th. He got out of
the bases loaded situation with some help of his catcher Tomas Nido, as Nido
picked a runner off at third for the second out of the frame. Hartford led off
the 5th with a single against Oswalt, but then Brendan Rodgers
grounded into a double play and Max White went down swinging to end the frame.
Amazingly,
the Rumble Ponies didn’t connect for another hit until the 6th, when
Corey Oswalt led off the frame with a solo blast to LF. Luis Guillorme added a
single in the frame.
After
giving himself a 1-0 lead, Oswalt went to the mound and tossed his only perfect
frame of the night, adding another strikeout of Nunez to his total. He allowed
a one out single in the 7th, which prevented him from finishing the
inning, as his pitch count had reached a season high 108. Tim Peterson took
over and retired the final batter of the 7th to keep the shutout
intact.
Tomas
Nido collected his single in the 7th.
The
Ponies strung together three straight hits in the 8th to add an
insurance run. Guillorme reached on a two out single to RF, went to second on a
Kevin Kaczmarski single, and then Matt Oberste brought him home with a single
to LF.
Working
with a 2-0 lead, Peterson and Cory Burns would retire the final six in a row.
Peterson was working on back-to-back nights for Binghamton, which isn’t as
common in the Mets minor league pens, especially when there isn’t an obvious need
for it. Peterson struck out Max White during a perfect 8th.
After
evening the series Tuesday, the Ponies look to gain a 2-1 edge in the series
Wednesday night behind Marcos Molina (0-2, 4.15 ERA). Game time is scheduled
for 7:05 PM, and the Ponies will face off against Yency Almonte (2-3, 1.96 ERA).
