Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies were riding high with a 5-0 lead as Mickey Jannis took
the hill in the 5th, but two errors, three singles, and a HBP later,
Jannis was coming out with just two outs recorded and the lead down to 5-2.
Then Jannis had to watch from the bench as Corey Taylor allowed all three
runners he inherited to score, plus one more to give the Harrisburg Senators a
lead. The Ponies were able to tie the game up with a run in the 7th,
and then Cody Decker (who made the first error of the 5th) put Bingo
ahead for good with a grand slam to left center.
Jannis
had issued a pair of walks, but he was mostly cruising through the first four
innings, and had a perfect 4th with two strikeouts. As expected, he
was mostly using his knuckler (which they were calling in the mid-70’s), but he
mixed in his 86 MPH fastball nicely at times too. He struck out five over the
first four innings, all shown below.
The
Rumble Ponies started to build their initial lead with a two run 2nd
inning. Kevin Taylor and David Thompson got the frame started with back-to-back
singles, but then the Ponies had to do nothing except not swing, as they took
three straight walks for two runs – even Jannis took a walk.
Kevin
Kaczmarski singled and stole second in the 3rd inning (his eighth
stolen base of the year), but was thrown out trying to score on a fly ball to
RF to end the frame.
The
Ponies added on with three more in the 4th. L.J. Mazzilli and
Patrick Biondi worked walks ahead of a Colton Plaia double to center field,
which brought them both home. Luis Guillorme doubled Plaia home two batters
later, which was his ninth double of the season and made it a 5-0 game. Kacz
followed with a single to RF, but Guillorme had to hold up at third on the
play, and then the Ponies stranded both in scoring position.
I
mostly summed up most of the Harrisburg 5th in the intro, but the
big hit for the Senators was a bases clearing double off the bat of Mario
Lisson. Taylor bounced back with a quick 6th, but the damage had
already been done. Decker and L.J. Mazzilli committed the errors and only one
of the runs charged to Jannis was earned.
Kacz
picked up his third hit of the game leading off the 7th and it led
to the tying run. He went to second on a Decker single and then scored on an
RBI groundout from David Thompson – Thompson's sac fly attempt didn’t work earlier, so
he stuck to the ground game this time.
Luis
Mateo took over from the Bingo pen in the 7th and was throwing
straight filth over two scoreless innings. There was a moment in the 7th
when he lost control – he issued a walk and then fell behind 3-1 on the next batter
– but then Mateo made an adjustment and finished his outing by striking out
five of the final six batters he saw.
Biondi
started the Bingo 8th with a single but was replaced on the bases by
Plaia due to a fielder’s choice. Plaia went to second on a Mier single and to
third on a Guillorme walk, which led to a pitching change for Harrisburg. With
the bases loaded, red-hot Kevin Kaczmarski got the first chance, but he went
down swinging for the second out of the frame. It came down to Cody Decker and
he muscled up for a grannie to make this a 10-6 game. Taylor followed with a
double, but the Ponies were unable to further pad their lead.
After
Mateo’s fine work, Tim Peterson came out for the 9th and allowed a
leadoff single. The next batter hit a double play grounder to Luis Guillorme to
erase the base runner, so no harm, no foul. Peterson then finished the game
with a strikeout of Stephen Perez to push the Ponies eleven games above .500.
These
two square off in a matchup of tough lefties Saturday at 6:00 PM. P.J. Conlon
(5-4, 3.32 ERA) gets the start for Binghamton opposite Matthew Crownover (0-1,
6.75 ERA), who is making his second Double-A start after posting a 1.94 ERA in
the Carolina league.
