Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s finally started showing signs of life again Tuesday night in
Tacoma, charging from down 5-1 after six innings to take an 8-7 win over the
Rainiers and even the series at one game apiece. In case the 30-48 record
didn’t make it obvious, 2017 has been a bit of a down year for the 51s, and
Tuesday night was shaping up to be another lackluster showing before things
turned around late. Travis Taijeron led off the 7th with his 13th
homer of the season, and that sparked a game winning 7-2 run for Las Vegas over
the final three frames.
51s
starter Donovan Hand gave the team some length, but left trailing 5-1 after a
pair of errors opened the door for three Tacoma runs across the 5th
and 6th innings. It wasn’t his sharpest outing, as he was in trouble
in every inning except the 4th, but he still would’ve finished with
a solid line if not for the errors.
63 double play |
Rosario at shortstop |
Las
Vegas started 0-8 at the plate, and a Phil Evans single was their only hit over
the first three innings.
Amed
Rosario doubled the 51s hit total with a one out single in the 4th,
and then came around to score when Dom Smith (single) and Kevin Plawecki
(double) followed with hits of their own.
Matt
Reynolds singled in the 6th inning but would leave after six, so he
may have be on call should the Mets decide to make a DL move.
As
mentioned, Taijeron led off the 7th with a solo blast to right
center. Gavin Cecchini followed with a single two batters later, went to third
on a Phil Evans double, and then scored on Victor Cruzado’s first hit of the
night.
Beck
Wheeler took over on the mound for the bottom of the 7th and he gave
those runs right back. Boog Powell and Tyler Smith connected for two RBI
doubles in a three-batter span before he could escape the jam. Wheeler did
strikeout D.J. Peterson during the frame.
Dom
Smith started the 51s big 8th inning with a walk, but then Plawecki
and Taijeron went on strikes, so it looked like the 51s wouldn’t get anything
out of the inning. But then Josh Rodriguez reached on an infield single, which
prompted the Rainiers to make a pitching change, and they went to closer Jean
Machi. Machi walked the first batter he saw out of the pen to load the bases
for Evans, and he came through with an RBI single. It was up to Victor Cruzado
with two outs in the 8th, and he cleared the bases with his fourth
double of the season to tie the game at seven.
Las
Vegas went to reliable lefty Kyle Regnault for the 8th and he kept
Tacoma off the board, striking out Steven Baron and working around a two out
double in the frame.
Machi
stayed out for the 9th and Las Vegas made Tacoma regret that
decision. Rosario started the frame with a triple to the right field corner and
Dominic Smith singled him home to give the 51s their first lead of the night.
Suddenly
ahead, Las Vegas turned to Hansel Robles to close things out in the 9th.
It was another high wire act for Robles, but he struck out two and kept Tacoma
off the board to pick up his third save since joining the team.
Looking
to gain a 2-1 edge in the series, Las Vegas will hand the baseball to Wilfredo Boscan
(3-5, 4.58 ERA) for his 14th start of the season Wednesday night. Boscan
had to be carried off after taking a deflection to his leg early in his last
start, so hopefully there’s no recurring injury problem for him Wednesday
night. Game time is scheduled for 10:05 PM ET, and the 51s will be facing Casey
Lawrence (0-0, 5.74 ERA).
