Recapish

After taking game one 5-1 behind Seth Lugo, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies turned to one of their top starters of 2017 to complete the double-header sweep in game two. The game turned into a pitcher’s duel between P.J. Conlon and Portland starter Jacob Dahlstrand, with neither side budging through the first five innings. With less than 90 pitches on his budget, Conlon was allowed to start the 6th, which backfired when he allowed a two run homer with pitch number 103. Tim Peterson kept Portland off the board the rest of the way, but the Bingo offense couldn’t get anyone home.
Red Sox stud third base prospect Rafael Devers stayed hot in game two with his 11th double of the season (he hit homer number ten in game one). Conlon struck out Danny Mars and Nick Longhi to strand Devers at second in the frame.

Devers

Conlon started the 2nd with a strikeout of Jeremy Barfield, but then issued his first of two walks, both of which came to Mike Olt. Fortunately, the Rumble Ponies turned a double play behind Conlon in the 2nd to erase the first walk.

With two on and two outs in the 3rd, Conlon struck out Rafael Devers swinging to put an end to the threat.
Luis Guillorme and Tomas Nido singled for the Rumble Ponies in the 3rd, but Nido was thrown out trying to extend his hit into a double, and Guillorme was stranded at third.

Conlon added another strikeout of Barfield to his total in the 4th, but then the next two reached to give Portland another two out scoring threat. However, Jake DePew hit a grounder to Gustavo Nunez for an inning ending force out.
Nunez and Patrick Biondi collected back-to-back singles to give the Ponies a two out threat of their own in the 4th, but they couldn’t cash in.

Biondi

The Sea Dogs went down in order during the 5th, which left Devers as the leadoff batter in the 6th – best he’s up with no runner on base. Devers went swinging to start the 6th, but then a David Thompson throwing error put Nick Longhi on first and forced Conlon to go to the stretch. Facing Barfield for the third time, but first from the stretch, Conlon allowed a two run blast to LF, which gave Portland the decisive 2-0 lead.
Tim Peterson allowed a pair of base runners in the 6th, but then DePew hit a grounder to Guillorme for an inning ending double play.

Guillorme with one of the smoothest flips ever, and nicely turned from Gustavo Nunez

Matt Oberste connected for his eighth double of the year in the Bingo half of the 6th, which gave the Ponies one last threat. David Thompson followed with a grounder to short and Oberste made the mistake of trying to advance on the play, getting thrown out at third instead.

Oberste

With a Bingo split of the double-header and a Trenton win, the Rumble Ponies fell to 2.5 games behind the division-leading Trenton Thunder Saturday (they still have the second best record in the EL though). They did win the first two games of this series though, so they have a chance for a series win behind Donovan Hand (3-1, 3.02 ERA) on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM and then the Rumble Ponies have an off day Monday.
