Recapish
The
Binghamtoon Rumble Ponies took game one of their double-header in New Hampshire
Friday evening behind an effectively wild start from Casey Delgado. Delgado
allowed seven hits and issued five walks over his five-plus innings of work,
but he limited New Hampshire to just two runs and left with a 4-2 lead. Fisher
Cats starter Jon Harris tried to follow a similar path to success – he allowed
seven hits and issued six walks – but he couldn’t come through with a big out
when needed in the 4th.
Kevin
Kaczmarski connected on the first hit of the double-header when he singled in
the 1st, but the Ponies couldn’t get him home in the frame.
Delgado
faced the minimum during the 3rd inning, but he didn’t have a
perfect frame until the 5th. His trouble started right away, as he
allowed two singles and uncorked a wild pitch in the 1st. But Tomas
Nido threw a runner out trying to steal second in the frame, which helped keep
New Hampshire off the board.
He
would not be so fortunate in the 2nd, but again his defense helped
him keep New Hampshire in check. Tim Lopes and Gunnar Heidt got the scoring
started with back-to-back doubles, and then Delgado walked the next two to load
up the bases. He’d strikeout Jonathan Davis for the second out, but then
Richard Urena singled to left to bring home a run. It might’ve been two runs,
but Champ Stuart threw Derrick Loveless out at third before Jake Thomas crossed
the plate.
The
Ponies came up empty despite a great chance to get some of those runs back in
the 3rd. Luis Guilorme hit his twelfth double of the season in the
frame, and then Kacz followed with a single to center. Given the throw into the
infield, Guillorme definitely would’ve scored on the play, but center fielder
Jonathan Davis has a good defensive reputation, which might’ve played a role in
the decision to hold Guillorme.
The
Ponies turned a double play in the 3rd to erase a single against Delgado
in the frame.
Binghamton
then crawled ahead with a three run 4th. Red-hot David Thompson
worked a walk to get the rally started, which was the first of four walks for
the Ponies in the frame. Tomas Nido followed with a single but it was L.J. Mazzilli
who provided the big hit in the frame, bringing home Thompson with a double to
RF. Guillorme and Kaczmarski took bases loaded walks to push Binghamton ahead
3-2.
The
Fisher Cats had a great chance to get at least one of those runs back in the
bottom of the 4th, as they loaded the bases against Delgado, but
again he got the big out when needed.
Matt
Oberste started the 5th with a single and eventually came around to
score a key insurance run. Thompson followed with a single of his own and a
Patrick Biondi walk would load the bases for Binghamton with just one out.
After a pitching change, Champ Stuart lined one off the pitcher for an RBI
infield hit, but Thompson would be thrown out trying to score from second on
the play.
Now
working with a 4-2 lead, Delgado tossed his first perfect frame in the 5th.
He came out for the 6th, but left after walking the leadoff batter.
Tim Peterson took over for Delgado and faced the minimum while allowing a run
over two innings of work. Because of a double play in the 8th,
Peterson was credited with three outs even though he faced just two batters in
the frame. Loveless tripled and scored against him in the 7th, but
that run made no difference in the outcome.
After
taking the opener Saturday night, Binghamton turned to reliever Scarlyn Reyes
for a spot start in game two.
