Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s woes continued Thursday night as they began an 11-game road trip
through the PCL in Reno with a 9-2 loss. The game was tightly contested until
recently demoted Hansel Robles entered in the 7th and his streak of
bad pitching continued. Robles was charged with six runs (five earned), retired
just one of eight batters faced, and the game was all but out of reach for Las
Vegas when he left.
Rafael
Montero continues to prove that he can successfully carve up a PCL lineup,
which makes you wonder if he just needs a change of scenery at this point. He
issued a walk and allowed a leadoff single in the 1st but Las Vegas
turned a double play behind him to help him through it.
Kevin
Plawecki started his night 2-2 with two doubles, which were the only two hits
off of Reno starter Aaron Laffey through six innings.
Montero
walked another batter in the 2nd, but he sandwiched that with
strikeouts of Jack Reinheimer and Carlos Rivero. Amed Rosario helped him end
the frame with a nice play.
Rosario
turned another nice play behind Montero in the 3rd, and then Rafa
struck out Oswaldo Arcia to strand a runner at second base.
The
Aces put two runners on (single, walk) with no outs in the 4th
inning, and then a throwing error from Dominic Smith allowed the first run of
the game to come home. Reno doubled their lead with a sac fly before Montero
could end the frame with a strikeout.
Montero
struck out Arcia and Reinheimer again in the 5th, but Ketel Marte
took him deep for his second PCL homer of the year.
Dominic
Smith was charged with his second GIDP of the game in the 6th,
though replay showed he was definitely safe on the
play (and that’s not the first time a Smith GIDP would’ve been
overturned with major league replay this year).
The
night ended for Montero when he reached 100 pitches in the 6th, but
he struck out Socrates Brito and Carlos Rivero to push his total to eight
before leaving. Kyle Regnault took over and finished the frame with a
strikeout.
Las
Vegas struck for two in the 7th to make things interesting, at least
temporarily. Desmond Jennings sparked the two out rally with a single to CF and
then came home on Gavin Cecchini’s 12th double of the year. Phillip
Evans followed with an RBI single to right center, which made it a 3-2 game.
The
7th did not go well for Hansel Robles. Among five hits allowed were
a pair of homers and a double that was initially called a homerun (not sure I’ve
seen an overturn like this at the minor league level before, but that got it
right!) - and yes, he pointed. Robles left with the bases loaded and Beck Wheeler allowed a two run
double to the first batter he faced out of the 51s pen. Fortunately Wheeler
calmed down and escaped further damage by striking out Marte and Arcia to end
the frame. Wheeler added a strikeout of Reinheimer during a perfect 8th.
The
51s final hit came when Dom Smith crushed a double off the base of the CF wall,
right next to the ‘410 ft’ sign.
These
two teams play three more times through the weekend, so the 51s are going to
have to find a way to beat the 34-20 Reno Aces. Las Vegas will look to Wilfredo
Boscan (0-3, 4.41 ERA) to get something good going Friday night in Reno, with
game time scheduled for 10:05 PM back east.
