Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies have been clicking at all levels lately and their good play
continued in a double-header with the Charleston River Dogs on Saturday. The
Fireflies took game one 5-3 on the back of another dominant performance from
Jordan Humphreys. Humphreys matched a season low with just four strikeouts, but
he took a shutout into the 6th and was missing bats at a solid rate
throughout the start. The Fireflies supported him with a five-run 3rd
inning, which was highlighted by Dash Winningham’s tenth homer of the year –
his fifth homer of June!
Humphreys
allowed six hits in the game, but the first five were just singles scattered
over the first five innings. He finished the 1st with a strikeout of
Estevan Florial.
Mandy
Alvarez went down swinging against Humphreys to start the 2nd and
then Dalton Blaser grounded into a double play to end the frame – Humphreys
issued just his eighth walk of the season between those two batters.
The
Fireflies finally broke through for some hits in the 4th. Andres
Gimenez finished 2-2 in the frame and got things going with a single into CF.
He was able to trot around and score on the Dash homer, which put Cola up 2-0.
Luis Carpio started a two out rally for Columbia two batters later with a
single. He went to third on a Brandon Brosher double and then scored on a balk.
Brosher came home on an E6, but the Fireflies weren’t done year. Gene Cone
followed with a walk against River Dogs starter Jio Orozco, which was the end
of the rope for him – Orozco had allowed nothing but a HBP over the first three
innings. After the new pitcher took over, Andres Gimenez came up for the second
time and surprised the River Dogs with an RBI bunt single to make it 5-0.
Humphreys
added a strikeout of Eduardo Navas to his total in the 5th, but he
had to work around a pair of singles in the frame.
He
started the 6th with a strikeout of Hoy Jun Park but then Florial
took him deep to end the shutout bid.
The
Fireflies only hit outside of the 4th came when Gimenez singled with
two outs in the 6th.
Joseph
Zanghi took over for the 7th inning and had trouble with command. He
walked four in the frame and had to leave with the lead down to 5-3. Fortunately,
Taylor Henry came in and struck out Brandon Wagner in a bases loaded situation
to end the game.
These
two suited up for another seven innings thirty minutes after this game ended. One
of the top Mets pitching prospects Thomas Szapucki made his second start of the
year.
