Recapish
It
took some poor execution down the stretch and a wild finish, but the Columbia
Fireflies beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-3 Saturday night for their first
win of the second half. At 41-30, these two teams have the same record in 2017,
and Kannapolis did take the first two games of this series, but this
Intimidators team has arguably been the sloppiest team Columbia has played all
year (it’s all about the fundies!). One notable exception to that would be
Micker Adolfo, who has looked like someone ready for a promotion. That sloppy
play didn’t lead to any Kannapolis errors Saturday night, but they did lose a
game when they outhit their opponent 10-2.
Columbia
starter Gabriel Llanes made his 13th start of the season Saturday
night, and it was business as usual for Columbia’s top remaining starter from
the first half. Llanes doesn’t have the stuff of a Thomas Szapucki or Jordan
Humphreys, but he does have good control of his fastball-slider-changeup mix,
and that’s allowed him to hold his SAL opponent to 2 ER or less in 10 of his 13
starts this year. It was just the third time this season he’s allowed more than
one walk in a start, and he issued his thirteenth walk of the season with two
outs during a scoreless 1st inning.
Kannapolis
starter Yelmison Peralta was pitching in the Carolina League last week, so he’s
someone who’s shown he can handle the SAL before, and he showed that again
Saturday. He did have strike zone problems at times, but the Fireflies couldn’t
get a hit off him during his 2.2 IP.
After
a scoreless 2nd, Llanes had a rough three-batter stretch in the 3rd
that put the Intimidators up 2-0. Aaron Schnurbusch provided the big hit in the
frame, launching a two run homer to left, and then Llanes walked the next
batter on four straight out of the zone. Fortunately for Columbia, Llanes was
able to regain his composure to retire the next two batters, striking out
Brandon Dulin along the way.
Dan
Rizzie caught a runner trying to steal in the 4th, which helped
Llanes face the minimum in the frame. Rizzie also connected on the Fireflies
first hit of the game with two outs in the 5th.
The
Intimidators pushed their lead to 3-0 with three straight singles in the 5th.
Llanes then uncorked a wild pitch, which put two runners in scoring position
with just one out, but he’d end the frame with one of the best defensive plays
a pitcher can make (also an example of the sloppiness from Kannapolis).
Llanes struck out a batter in both the 6th
and 7th innings, but his pitch count forced him to an exit just one
out shy of what would’ve been his seventh seven-inning start of the season.
Adam Atkins came in and struck out the final batter of the 7th to
strand a runner at second base.
The
Fireflies finally broke through for some runs in the bottom of the 7th.
Dash Winningham worked a leadoff walk and then Jay Jabs doubled him to third.
The Fireflies generally execute well on both sides of the ball, and they were
able to get both runs home on sac flies – including one from Milton Ramos that
went to the RF warning track.
Matt
Blackham came out of the Cola pen for the 8th and threw a dominant
1-2-3 frame. He struck out Brandon Dulin and Zach Remillard before fielding a
weak grounder to end the inning. Adonis Uceta kept the scoreless work from the
pen going with a quick 9th, which kept the game within striking
distance for Columbia.
Just
like the Fireflies 7th inning rally, the 9th inning rally
started with a leadoff walk for Dash. Andres Gimenez came in for Dash as a
pinch runner, but he was able to walk to second when Jabs worked a second
straight walk against the new Intimidators reliever Ben Wright. With the game
on the line, the Fireflies relied on the little, unglamorous things to complete
their comeback. Ramos laid down a great sac bunt to advance both runners into
scoring position, and then the tying run came home on a Tebow groundout. Just
like he did after the Ramos sac fly in the 7th, Jabs advanced to
third on the Tebow groundout, and those two minor plays proved huge in this
game. Rizzie was up next with a chance to be the walkoff hero, but the first
pitch to him went through the catcher’s legs for a wild pitch, and Jabs dashed
home for the walkoff win.
Columbia’s
bats have been a little quiet out of the All-Star break, which is why they’re
down two games to one in the series, but they’ve otherwise outplayed Kannapolis
over the first three games. The Fireflies will look to Thomas Szapucki (1-1,
3.86 ERA) to even this series on Sunday, with a game time scheduled for 5:05
PM.
So far, Uranus & Neptune have only been visited briefly. That could change with a future mission to these ice giants https://t.co/Q95boFQAVG pic.twitter.com/t7kwYC33Ad— NASA (@NASA) June 25, 2017
