Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies outlasted the Senators for a 4-3 win in extras Sunday
afternoon in Harrisburg. Both teams scored their runs early and then struggled to
get anything going against the other teams bullpen. In the end, Binghamton’s
bullpen provided seven innings of one run ball, while the Senators pen hit a
wall in their fifth inning of work, and that was the difference.
The
Rumble Ponies had a great scoring opportunity in the 1st but a Tomas
Nido double play grounder ended the threat with no runs scored. There’s a lot
to like about Nido, but he does still have catcher speed, so he’ll start plenty
of double plays in his career. Champ Stuart led the game off with a double and
then went to third on a bunt hit from Luis Guilorme. Kevin Kaczmarski was moved
to the three-hole for this game as a reward for his great hitting since May
began, but he would pop out before the double play ended this threat.
The
Senators put together the same threat but with one out in the bottom of the 1st.
Fortuantely, Casey Delgado settled down and struck out Raudy Read and Corban
Joseph to end the Harrisburg threat.
Delgado
added a strikeout of Khayyan Norfork in the 2nd, but he again had to
work around a pair of base runners in the frame.
Harrisburg
finally got to Delgado with two outs in the 3rd. Delgado had just
finished off Jose Marmolejos for his fourth strikeout of the game when Read and
Joseph went back-to-back with doubles.
The
Rumble Ponies answered with back-to-back doubles for a run to tie the game in
the 4th. Kaczmarski and Nido got redemption this time, meaning all
four players who failed with RISP in the 1st ended up doubling their
second time up Sunday. Kevin Taylor followed with an RBI single to give the
Ponies a temporary 2-1 lead.
Delgado
started the 4th with a strikeout of Stephen Perez but would again
run into two out trouble during the frame. First he walked the opposing pitcher
with two outs (which should never happen, but happened twice Sunday), and then
Alec Keller tripled the pitcher home to tie the game. Delgado finished the
frame with a strikeout of Mario Lisson, but that was the end of his start.
The
Rumble Ponies pinch-hit for Delgado in the top half of the 5th and
then Ben Griset was the first out of the pen in the bottom half. He worked two
scoreless innings, picking up a strikeout of Isaac Ballou in the 5th.
Corey
Taylor followed Griset with two scoreless innings of his own, collecting a pair
of strikeouts along the way and hitting mid-90’s per the Harrisburg announcers.
After
Taylor came Tim Peterson and he added two strikeouts over two scoreless as
well.
Binghamton
managed just three hits from the 4th through the 11th,
when they finally broke through. Kevin Taylor singled in the 6th,
Matt Oberste singled in the 9th, and then David Thompson doubled in
the 10th. Oberste’s single put runners on the corners with just one
out, but a double play followed to end the inning.
The
Ponies finally broke through for two in the 11th, although they had
to do little except show good patience at the plate. Tomas Nido’s single was
the only hit in a frame that included four walks and a sac fly from Patrick
Biondi. The sac fly brought home Nido, whose speed had hurt the Ponies way back
in the 1st.
That
Nido run proved huge when the Senators got to Cory Burns for a run in the
bottom half of the 11th. Burns put on a tightrope performance, but
he stranded the bases loaded to seal the win for Binghamton.
After
taking two of three from Harrisburg, the Rumble Ponies are off Monday as they
travel to Erie to start a three game series with the Sea Wolves.
