Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies wasted countless opportunities as they dropped their
series final with the Fisher Cats 5-3 Sunday afternoon in New Hampshire. The
Ponies finished 3-21 with runners in scoring position Sunday, which is how you
score just three runs in a game despite finishing with eleven hits and three
walks while the other team committed two errors. The Fisher Cats had plenty of
base runners as well, but they took control of this game thanks to a pair of
homerun’s.
Mickey
Jannis has been cruising early during his start Sunday, but then he allowed
both of those homers, one each in the 4th and 5th
innings, and left down 5-3. He walked a season-high five batters just one start
after he finished with 8 K: 0 BB over 8 IP against Bowie. Thus is the life of a
knuckleballer in training. Jannis struck out Jonathan Davis in the 1st
and then Ryan McBroom in the 2nd. He only managed to keep the Cats off the board in the 2nd because of a strong throw from right fielder L.J. Mazzilli, which made it home just in time for the final out of the frame.
Luis
Guillorme started the game with a single and eventually reached third on a
stolen base (his fourth of the year), but the Ponies couldn’t get him in – the
start of a trend.
Matt
Oberste doubled in the 3rd but never made it beyond second base.
L.J.
Mazzilli worked a leadoff walk and then Tomas Nido singled him into scoring
position during the 4th, but then Bingo went down 1-2-3.
Gunnar
Heidt’s ninth homer of the season gave New Hampshire a 2-0 lead after 4.
Binghamton finally broke through in the 5th, and their three-run
rally gave them a temporary lead. Guillorme led off the frame with a single
again, and then went to second when Kevin Kaczmarski worked a walk. After the
next two Ponies were retired, Mazzilli came up and started a string of three
straight RBI singles, Nido and Gustavo Nunez following his lead to make this a
3-2 game.
That
Bingo lead lasted exactly four batters. Richard Urena was up fourth in the
Fisher Cats half of the 5th and he launched his third homer of the
season to make this a 5-3 game.
Kelly
Secrest and Luis Mateo kept New Hampshrie off the board for the next three
innings, which kept the door for a Bingo comeback, had they been able to get
any more hits with runners in scoring position.
Champ
Stuart led off the 6th with a bunt single and ended up on third
after a throwing error. Still, even with their fastest runner at third and
nobody out, the Ponies couldn’t get a run in during the frame.
Nunez
and Colton Plaia singled leading off the 8th, but again, they were
both stranded in scoring position.
David
Thompson singled for Binghamton in the 9th, and, as you can imagine,
the game ended with him in scoring position.
After
this disastrous performance with runner’s in scoring position, the Rumble
Ponies hit the road for Hartford, where they’ll start a series with the 32-41 Yard
Goats Monday night. P.J. Conlon (5-5, 3.56 ERA) gets the nod in the opener
opposite Parker French (6-6, 4.65 ERA), with game time scheduled for 7:05 PM. I’m
pretty sure Hartford has a good MiLBtv feed.
