Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies dropped the opener of a four-games-in-three-days
series in New Hampshire Friday night, struggling to find hits against the #2 rated prospect in the
Blue Jays system, Sean Reid-Foley. Binghamton countered with one of the Mets
better pitching prospects in Marcos Molina, and he turned in a very strong
7-inning performance, but he left trailing 2-0 and took the tough-luck loss.
David Thompson’s red-hot June continued when he launched a solo blast to DEEP
left field in the 9th. It was his eleventh extra base hit of June,
and his fourth homer over the past week (he also has a pair of doubles during
that span!).
Fisher
Cats announcers had Sean Reid-Foley sitting 93-94 with his heater Friday night,
and overall he looked significantly better than the first two times he faced
the Ponies at home. In those two starts he went a total of 2.1 IP on 74
pitches, with just 40 of those pitches falling in for strikes. He showed much
better control of his stuff Friday night, which helped him get through seven
scoreless. He started his night with a strikeout of Luis Guillorme as he set
the Ponies down in order in the 1st.
Marcos
Molina’s stuff showed nice movement throughout the start, but he’s topping out
around 91-92 right now (he was 94-95 before the surgery), and he’s leaving his
stuff up sometimes. The Fisher Cats were able to take advantage of the
fastballs he left up for eight singles over his seven innings of work, and they
jumped ahead 1-0 with three and a sac fly in the 1st. Before the run
came around, Molina started his night with a strikeout of Jonathan Davis on
just three pitches. (There are a lot of Molina examples scattered throughout his sections).
Tomas
Nido connected for Binghamton’s first hit of the night in the 2nd,
but then David Thomson and Gustavo Nunez went down swinging against Reid-Foley
before the Ponies could put together a threat. Also shown below are
Reid-Foley’s final two strikeouts, which came against Champ Stuart and Nido, and Kevin Taylor’s double from the 6th inning.
Molina
worked around a two out single for a scoreless 2nd inning, and then
two two-out singles for a scoreless 3rd. He finally worked a perfect
frame in the 4th, and then a pickoff in the 5th helped
him faced the minimum for two straight. He issued his only unintentional walk
of the game in the 6th, but he’d finish the frame with his second
strikeout (Gunnar Heidt).
Andrew Guillotte led off the Fisher Cats
7th with a single and eventually came around to score on a wild
pitch. In between those two instances, New Hampshire laid down successive bunts
for one out (the second bunt was a sac bunt), so the Ponies had Molina issue an intentional walk that loaded the bases. The
gambit might’ve paid off, but Molina uncorked a wild pitch that allowed
Guillotte to come home and make it a 2-0 lead. Molina then finished the frame
with a strikeout and pop out.
Luis
Guillorme led off the 8th with a bunt single, but the Ponies did
nothing else in the frame. Also shown below is the massive blast off the bat of
David Thompson – check out the people in the LF stands twisting around to see
how far the ball is going to go.
Before
Thompson went deep, Luis Mateo came out for the 8th and the Fisher
Cats took a commanding 5-0 lead. Mateo has been reliable this year, but he’d
allow a double and then a three-run homer to Heidt. He did settle down to
strikeout Derrick Loveless in the frame, but it was a third straight night the
Ponies pen was lit up.
After
dropping a third straight in the opener, the Ponies will look to get things
righted during a double-header Saturday evening, as they’ve found success in
double-headers this season (it’s the Eastern League, there are always a lot of
double-headers). Casey Delgado (4-4, 5.43 ERA) was scheduled to start the
opener for Binghamton, but no starter was listed for game two.
