Recapish
The
Fireflies string of great pitching continued Friday night in Charleston, as
Columbia took the opener with the River Dogs 4-1 for Jordan Humphreys tenth win
of the season. The team with a SAL best 2.95 ERA has allowed just 2.43 runs/game since 5/25 (earned +
unearned), with a +53 run differential for an 18-5 record over those 23 games.
Jordan Humphreys needed more than
50 pitches for the first two innings as Columbia fell behind 1-0, but he was
nearly flawless over his final four frames as they jumped ahead 4-1. Milton
Ramos had a perfect night at the plate and two stolen bases in an unexpected
start at shortstop (the initial
Fireflies lineup had Andres Gimenez in it), and Brandon Brosher provided
the pop with his fifth homer of the year.
Blake
Rutherford collected the first hit of the game when he singled with two outs in
the 1st. Humphreys responded with a strikeout of Isiah Gilliam to
end the frame.
Brandon
Wagner led off the Charleston 2nd with a double to the right field
corner and Ben Ruta singled him home to give the River Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Columbia
bounced back with a run in the 3rd, but they were set up for so much
more. The run came on consecutive singles from Brosher, Tim Tebow, and Milton
Ramos – Ramos had the RBI hit. Gene Cone followed with his SAL best 39th
walk of the season to load the bases with nobody out and Luis Carpio, Michael
Paez, and Dash Winningham due up. Unfortunately (and surprisingly), Dash never
made it to the plate, as Carpio lined out and then Paez hit into an inning
ending double play.
With
the Charleston starter on the ropes and the game tied again, Jordan Humphreys
responded by tossing a six-pitch 3rd inning, which forced Nick
Nelson back out to the mound before he could get much of a break. The Fireflies
battled him hard in the 4th, and Jay Jabs connected for a single to
get the little rally started. After Jose Medina took a HBP, Brandon Brosher
came up and provided the difference maker in this game, launching a three-run
shot to right to make it 4-1 (it also knocked Nelson out of the game).
The
Fireflies had another huge chance to score in the 5th but failed to
add on. Luis Carpio led off with a single and then went to third on Michael
Paez’s 21st double of the season (a ground-rule double), and then
Columbia went down on a groundout, strikeout, and fly out.
After
that there was little offense from either side until the bottom of the 8th.
Humphreys faced the minimum over the next three innings thanks to double plays
in the 4th and 6th inning, and an OF assist in the 5th.
He struck out Ben Ruta and Eduardo Navas in the 5th, but this ended
up being a season-low three-strikeout performance for Humphreys.

Ramos
had the last two hits for Columbia, singling in the 6th and hitting
a ground-rule double in the 9th.
Taylor
Henry took over from the Fireflies pen for the 7th and struck out
Brandon Wagner and Alexander Palma in the frame. The inning ended on a heads up
play from Milton Ramos after he couldn’t hold onto a hard liner. Gilliam led
off the frame with a single and had just stolen second base before the play,
which is shown as the final GIF below.
Columbia
went to Cameron Griffin for the 8th, but he would need assistance to
get through the frame unscathed. After a missed catch error on Carpio loaded
the bases for Charleston with one out, Adonis Uceta came in to clean up the
mess. He started his outing with a nasty
three-pitch sequence for a strikeout of Blake Rutherford, and then struck out
Isiah Gilliam looking to strand the bases loaded.
Uceta
hasn’t allowed a run since he was tagged for four on May 7th, a
stretch of eleven appearances during which he has dominated: 16.2 IP, 4 H, 22 K: 5 BB with 1 HBP, so the SAL has a
.078/.172/.078 against him during that stretch. I’ve heard him 90-95/96 this
year and he flashes a devastating changeup, so he may be interesting for the
Mets in a few years. The Fireflies turned a double play behind him in the 9th
to erase a HBP.
Since
Greenville also won, the Drive’s elimination number only dropped to two, but that
still means that Columbia can clinch the first-half playoff spot with a win
Saturday combined with a Greenville loss. The Fireflies will also clinch if
they win out or the Drive lose out, but they can’t go 1-1 this weekend if
Greenville ends up sweeping Rome.
With
every win carrying a little extra importance this weekend, the Fireflies turn
to the roster’s highest rated prospect for Saturday’s matchup in Charleston.
Thomas Szapucki (1-0, 4.35 ERA) is slated to make his third start of the season
opposite Brian Keller (4-5, 3.97 ERA), with a game time scheduled for 6:05 PM.
