Recap
The
Las Vegas 51s bullpen had to go 5+ innings for the second straight night, and
struggled to keep up with the workload against a hot Reno lineup. Tyler Pill
settled in after allowing a solo blast to Peter O’Brien in the 1st,
but rain and hail started to fall right after the 51s took a 2-1 lead in the 4th.
After the extended delay, the 51s sent out Zack Thornton for the 4th
and he continued his recent struggles, allowing 3 runs for a 4-2 Reno lead.
Scott Rice came in for two great innings in the 5th and 6th,
giving Las Vegas a chance to cut the lead down to 3-2. But Cody Satterwhite’s
early season struggles continued in the 7th, when Reno added two
insurance runs. The 51s bats were quiet all day, managing only 5 hits against a
tough Blake Beaven, which you can check out in the highlights below.
Although
he was by no means dominant, Pill was having his most effective start in AAA
through 3 IP, allowing 4 base runners. He was helped out by a couple of nice
defensive plays in the 2nd inning: Alex Castellanos made a diving
catch in LF, and Brandon Allen dove to snag a grounder up the 1B line and
landed on the bag. Pill is off to a rough start as he adjusts to AAA, but he
has four average offerings that he controls well, so I think he can be more
effective moving forward.
I’m
not sure what’s up with Thornton lately, as he’s allowed 6 ER on 8 H over his
last 3 IP. It might just be a bump in the road, but he went through rough
patches like this in 2014 too. Scott Rice has looked great his past few times
out, allowing only two base runners with 5 SO over his last 5 IP.
The
51s send Rafael Montero out to pitch Thursday night looking to put an end to
their losing streak. I haven’t seen his announced pitch limit yet, but he threw
44 pitches on Sunday, so I’d guess he would be limited to about 75 pitches.
Wilfredo
Tovar got the 3rd inning started with this single lined into CF, and
then came in to score the 51s first run of the game on Darrell Ceciliani’s
third double of the year.
Johnny
Monell hit his second bomb of the year leading off the 4th.
Ceciliani
and Matt Reynolds led off the 6th with back-to-back singles, but
they’d be stranded at 2B and 3B.
