Recap
Martires
Arias was in control from the start, and the Sand Gnats bats provided enough
punch to hold off Charleston in the series final Sunday evening. Of the 4 hits
Arias allowed, three were doubles, although Dustin Fowler was eliminated trying
to stretch his first double into a triple. Still, despite getting a few runners
to 3B against Arias over the first 6 innings, it never seemed like Arias was in
trouble. That change when the first three batters reached in the 7th,
loading the bases with the 6-7-8 batters due up. Arias would recover by
striking out Austin Aune, who had doubled off of him in the 5th, and
then getting a groundball to second baseman Jonathan Johnson to start an inning
ending 4-3 double play. The River Dogs finally broke through for 2 runs against
Cameron Griffin in the 8th, but Shane Bay came in and shut the door
with a strong 9th. Pedro Perez had a big day for the Gnats, but no
one else in the lineup had more than one hit, which made runs harder to come
by. But they would be aided by five extra base hits in the game, which you can
check out in the highlights below.
Tomas
Nido hit his fourth double of the season with two outs in the 2nd,
but Vicente Lupo couldn’t bring him home.
Pedro
Perez led off the 3rd inning with his first of two doubles on the
day. He’d come around to score when John Mora hit his second double of the
season with two outs in the frame.
Stefan
Sabol led off the 7th with his 5th double of the season,
and then trotted home when Jon Leroux hit his first bomb of 2015.
Wuilmer
Becerra hit a two-out single to advance Luis Guillorme (walk) to 2B in the 8th,
but Stefan Sabol would strikeout to end the threat.
After
Tomas Nido reached 2B on an throwing error by SS Jorge Mateo with one out, Lupo
moved him to 3B with a single, and Perez brought him home with his fourth
double of the season.
Bonus
Wuilmer
Becerra showing off his defense in RF with this great diving catch, seemingly
coming out of nowhere.
Pitcher Coverage
Martires Arias
Arias
is too advanced/old to stay in the SAL for long, especially if he keeps
pitching like this. It was his first start against someone other than Rome, and
he was keeping the River Dogs off balance all game with his nice changeup. Heard
his fastball between 91 and 93 MPH Sunday, and it probably looks a little
faster coming out of the hands of this lanky 6’7” giant.
Arias started his day by striking out Charleston’s second
best prospect Abiatal Avelino.
He’d start the 2nd inning with a strikeout of
Connor Spencer, but they didn't show the pitch Jorge Mateo went down swinging leading off the 4th
inning.
With two outs and Austin Aune (double) on 3B in the 5th,
Allen Valerio went down swinging to end the threat.
Arias would get payback against Aune in the 7th,
striking him out with the bases loaded for the first out of the frame.
Shane Bay
Bay
gets the ‘crafty lefty’ label for having a mid-80’s fastball and a mid-60’s curveball.
The Bugs Bunny curve was working for him in the 9th, buckling a lot
of Charleston knees, although it’s big loopy shape probably hurt him on some
close calls.
Bay would get Aune swinging for the 2nd out in
the 9th.
