Recap:
Before
the game even started Sunday, Binghamton was down 2 players to injury (T.J.
Rivera is day-to-day with a tweaked hamstring, and Domingo Tapia is heading to
Florida for an MRI). Then, after playing a tight game over the first 7 innings
Sunday afternoon, the Harrisburg bats would once again beat up on the
Binghamton bullpen, this time making the series finale a laugher. Aside from
Josh Rodriguez, the B-Mets bats were quiet all day, as Austin Voth had great
command of his arsenal. Brandon Nimmo was struck in the left hand with a pitch
and looked to be in pain, but he’d stay in the game and come to the plate
during his next scheduled AB.
Binghamton starter John Gant had a
much more effective outing in his second start with the Mets, working ahead in
the count for much of the day. He created some trouble for himself in the 2nd
inning by allowing two walks, but he would’ve escaped the inning with no damage
if not for a costly error from newly activated 2B Jairo Perez. With two outs
and runners on 1B and 2B, Voth hit a slow grounder to Perez that was bobbled,
leaving Jairo with no play at 1B, so he held onto the ball and put his head
down for a moment. But Harrisburg catcher Pedro Severino never stopped running
around 3B, and by the time Perez was made aware of this, his weak throw home
had no chance. It was Severino who started a one-out rally against Gant in the
4th too, as he hit the first of two consecutive singles before Voth
bunted them over. The Senators leadoff batter Caleb Ramsey drove them both home
with a single to CF, but he’d be caught trying to advance to 2B when the throw
home was cut off. Gant was removed in the 6th with Severino coming
up, so clearly Pedro Lopez did not favor that matchup.
The B-Mets scratched out a run in
the 5th, and Beck Wheeler had one of his best performances out of
the bullpen to hold things over through the 7th. That’s when Dario
Alvarez came in for the 8th and walked himself into trouble with one
out. He’d strike out Shawn Pleffner for the second out in the 8th,
but allow back-to-back RBI hits that gave Harrisburg a comfortable 7-2 lead – once
again, Pedro Severino was in the middle of a Harrisburg rally. After the Mets
scratched out their 2nd run in the 8th, Adam Kolarek came
in for the 9th and allowed four more runs, as everything Harrisburg
touched turned to gold.
Binghamton continues their home
stand Monday at 6:35 PM with Erie coming to town for 3. The B-Mets lost 2 of 3
to Erie last week, so they’ll be looking for revenge. No starter has officially
been announced for Bingo, but Seth Lugo would be on turn to start.
Jairo
Perez picked up his first AA hit with out in the 5th on this single
into RF.
After
John Gant laid down a nice sac bunt to move him over, Jared King brought him
home with a single to CF.
King
would lead off the 8th with a walk and then come around to score on
this double into the LF corner from Josh Rodriguez, his third hit of the night.
