Recap:
The
B-Mets won their second consecutive shutout victory over Akron Saturday
afternoon behind a very efficient Gabriel Ynoa, who might have had a shutout if
not for the pitch limits. After scoring 13 runs in the final 3.1 IP Thursday
night, Akron has now gone scoreless for 18 straight innings, and only managed 7
hits during that time. This game was another scoreless pitcher’s duel through
the first five innings, as neither side could capitalize on their scoring
opportunities. Akron made a pitching change for the top of the 6th and
the Mets quickly took advantage of the ‘lesser’ pitching. After getting hit by
a pitch with one out, Dustin Lawley would steal 2B and then score on Gavin
Cecchini’s second hit of the night, a two-out RBI for Cheech. The Mets would
add an insurance run in the 9th, but reliever Paul Sewald had little
trouble cruising through the last two innings to get his first AA save – he went
11/11 with St. Lucie in 2014. Bingo turns to Luis Cessa in the finale Sunday
afternoon with a chance to win the 4-game series.
Offense Highlights
The
B-Mets would load the bases with one out in the 2nd, but Cordero
ended the threat with a double play groundout. Josh Rodriguez reached on a
one-out walk, and then Aderlin Rodriguez followed with this single to RF.
Cecchini would follow with a walk.
Cecchini
had a perfect day at the plate, and was in the middle of all of the B-Mets
threats. Here was his first hit of the day, which put two runners on with two
out for Cordero, who would fly out to CF.
Cecchini’s
second hit brought home Lawley with the first run of the game. Lawley reached
on a HBP, and Josh Rodriguez followed with a walk. After Aderlin struck out for
the second out of the inning, Cheech came up with the biggest hit of the day.
Cecchini
led off the 9th inning with a walk, and then advanced to 2B on a
throwing error from the first baseman after Akron had him picked off. Cordero
then brought him home with a single to LF.
Cheech also made this nice play in the field.
Ynoa Coverage
Ynoa
didn’t strike many Akron batters out Saturday afternoon, but he was working
quickly and efficiently through their lineup. He had 3 clean innings, and
looked confident and comfortable on the mound regardless of whether someone was
on base – as he should considering he’s already had some success in AA. He
mostly kept hitters off balance by changing speed and location throughout the
game, but he still threw a few nice looking breaking balls. His command was
excellent, and Akron hitters just could not square the ball up off of him,
which led to the 9 groundouts, several of which came on the first pitch.
