Recap
After
Noah Syndergaard dazzled
in game one, this game was bound to be a bit of a let down, but it turned
out to be a nicely paced pitcher’s duel. Darin Gorski bounced back from his
worst start of 2015 to toss five strong innings, only getting in trouble during
a two-run 3rd inning for Albuquerque. It was a very different lineup
for the 51s in the nightcap, as many of the regulars were given rest, and their
absence was reflected in the meager offensive output. Alex Castellanos provided
the go-ahead run with a blast in the 6th, and then Duane Below
combined with Chase Bradford to keep the Isotopes off the board over the final
two innings for another 51s win, which makes it 5 in a row.
Gorski
should be a pretty well known quantity for the Mets at this point – he gets his
K’s and can work through a AAA lineup once or twice, but his mistakes get hit
hard, and often end up deposited over the OF wall. He’s also very far down the
Mets starting pitcher depth chart, so I wonder if he’ll see the pen at any
point in 2015. He got into trouble after allowing a one-out walk in the 3rd.
After striking out Brandon Barnes for the second out of the inning, the
Isotopes would rally for two runs on a single and double. He would allow a
couple of two-out runners in the 4th too, but had no trouble
striking out Albuquerque pitcher Carlos Hernandez. Duane Below came in and
looked very good over his 1.1 IP, featuring a nice curve on the night. Bradford
would the first batter he’d face to reach on a single off of a hanging slider,
but the next batter hit a groundball to start a double play.
Gorski
helped himself on the mound too, providing a big RBI double to bring home
Travis Taijeron in the 2nd. Taijeron had followed Brooks Conrad’s
single with one of his own leading off the inning, but the next two batters had
been retired on groundouts.
Tyler
Pill starts in the series finale Tuesday at 3:05 PM.
