Recapish
He
had to wait a few extra days due to rain, but Corey Oswalt picked up a win for
his 5th different Mets affiliate Friday night (not including the
AFL), as the Rumble Ponies took their opener with Erie 8-3. Binghamton got all
the offense they would need during a two-out rally in the 5th
inning, which was capped off by Cody Decker’s first homer for the franchise
(see below for visuals).
Oswalt, a HS draft pick from the 7th
round of the 2012 draft, has steadily progressed through the Mets system the
past 5 years. While he’s never shown eye-popping stuff on the mound, he’s been
a consistent performer thanks to his control, but now that he’s reached
Double-A, the real tests begin. In 330.1 IP throughout the minors (not
including AFL), Oswalt has posted a solid 276 K: 66 BB (20.1 K%: 4.8 BB%) ratio
and allowed just 14 HR, but opponents have gotten to him for 359 hits.
Oswalt
had allowed just a pair of singles over the first 6 innings but Christin
Stewart led off the 7th with a double and came around to score on a
pair of groundouts. Kyle Regnault had a very sharp 8th in relief of
Oswalt, but Ben Griset would run into trouble in the 9th. Fortunately
the Rumble Ponies lead was more than big enough to handle the late charge from
Erie.
This
series continues Saturday afternoon at 4:05 PM, with Casey Delgado (0-2, 10.13
ERA) scheduled to pitch for the Rumble Ponies.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
The
Rumble Ponies got the scoring started in the 3rd thanks Champ
Stuart’s speed: Stuart led off with a bunt single, stole 2B, stole 3B, and then
came home on a infield single that went about 20 feet in front of the plate.
David
Thompson picked up the first RBI hit in the 3rd, and he doubled the
scored with an RBI single to bring Jio Mier home in the 5th. Kevin
Kaczmarski and Matt Oberste followed with singles of their own, which brought
Thompson around to score. Then Cody Decker stepped up and launched his first
homer of the season, a three run blast that doubled the Bingo lead to 6-0.
Kacz
hit a one out triple in the 7th and came around on a sac fly to make
it 7-0.
The
Ponies added their final insurance run in the 9th, when Oberste
doubled and then came around to score on a Kevin Taylor single.

*13.5% Swinging strike rate; 26.7% Whiff/Swing
Oswalt capped off a perfect 1st inning by
striking out Logan Watkins.
After allowing his first hit of the game, Oswalt bounced
back to strikeout Dominic Ficociello for the second out of the 2nd.
The strikeout came on a wild pitch that allowed Ficociello to advance to 2B.
A.J. Simcox was Oswalt’s next victim, going down swinging
for the second out of the 3rd inning.
Grayson Greiner went down looking for Oswalt’s final K to
start the 6th inning.
