Quick note

Hey prospect fans! I know it’s been awhile since I’ve done anything on here, and sorry for leaving y’all hanging, but life came up and the blog was moved to the back burner. I’m not sure how much I will be able to cover here this season – it won’t be as much as in the past – but I will be covering some games (with GIF’s of course), and perhaps more. As far as GIF vs. MP4, I'm going to try to have the smaller sized MP4 files, but may stick with GIF if I'm short on time.

Recapish

After playing through rain (and rain threats) while splitting the first two games of this series, the Fireflies and Braves sent a pair of high school draft picks to the mound for a hump day matinee. And while it was Rome’s Ian Anderson who came in as the well-established prospect (he was Atlanta’s #1 pick last year, drafted #3 overall), it was Jordan Humphreys (the Mets 18th round pick from 2015) who shined for 6 innings to earn the win.
The Fireflies were able to take advantage of some wildness from Anderson early in the game to jump ahead 2-0 over the first 2 innings. Anderson issued three walks (including one with the bases loaded), a HBP, and uncorked a wild pitch over his first two frames. His outing likely would’ve been worse if not for the four strikeouts he picked up over those two frames. Unfortunately for Columbia, strikeouts were a problem that would plague the Fireflies offense all day. Columbia struck out 15 times Wednesday morning, with 10 of those strikeouts coming from the 5, 6, and 8 spots in the lineup: Tebow (3), Gamache (3), and Brosher (4).
Humphreys matched that 4-strikeout total over his first two innings of work, although he didn’t manage any during the rest of the game. He didn’t allow a runner to reach until the 5th inning, when Juan Yepez led off with a double. Most left fielders would’ve limited all but the fastest runners to a single on the play, but Tim Tebow was slow going after this hit into the gap, and the Braves (successfully) challenged his arm throughout the series. Yepez would come around to score on a two out single trickled through the right side by Lucas Herbert later in the frame. Herbert’s RBI single really was not well struck, but because the Fireflies had over shifted the righty, he had the entire right side to aim for.
Gene Cone slid over to CF for this game and really shined at the top of the lineup (both spots top prospect Desmond Lindsay had been occupying recently). He was on base three times (Jay Jabs also did this, but he was surrounded by 10 strikeouts), and a big part of the last two runs Columbia scored. Cone took the bases loaded walk to put Columbia up 2-0 in the 2nd, and he started the 7th inning rally with a one out single into CF. The #2 man in the lineup (Luis Carpio) also had a big day: he reached base twice, stole two bases, and scored a run. Carpio came into the season 21-32 on stolen bases over 125 games in rookie ball, but is already 7-7 through just 13 games with Columbia. Recently, Champ Stuart, the Mets fastest prospect, announced he’d like to reach 100 stolen base attempts in 2017, so it will be interesting to see who ends up with more – Champ is 4-4 on stolen base attempts through 9 games with Binghamton.
Adonis Uceta took over for Humphreys to start the 7th and looked solid while retiring 6 of 7 batters faced. Unfortunately for Columbia, Rome was able to squeeze a run out of that one base runner against Uceta in the 8th, cutting the lead to 3-2 with the series on the line.
Fireflies closer Joseph Zanghi was called on for the save in the 9th and walked a tight rope while finishing out the win. He allowed back-to-back singles with one out, which would’ve put runners on the corners if not for a key base running mistake. Anthony Concepcion hit the second single to the right side of center field and made a hard turn at 1B on Cone’s throw into the infield. Michael Paez made the heads up play to cut the throw off and redirect it to 1B in time for the second out of the inning. With the tying run just 90 feet away, Zanghi induced a game-ending pop out to Milton Ramos on the infield grass to secured the win.
Looking ahead, the Fireflies return home from a 4-3 road trip to host Lexington and Asheville over the next week. Gabriel Llanes (0-1, 7.45 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound Thursday night at 7:05 PM as Columbia takes aim at a 3-game winning streak.

            Luis Carpio.

Excuse me? OK, I'll take a single.

#7

Michael Paez picked up a single and a sac fly to bring home the games third run.

Milton Ramos is 4-8 over the last two Fireflies games.

MiLB.tv Defense Highlights

Ramos has been spending time at third base early in the season and made an excellent diving catch on a popped up bunt.

Jose Miguel Medina is a 20-year old out of the Dominican Republic who is making his full season debut in 2017 and patrolling RF for Columbia.

For a more detailed scouting report on Jordan Humphreys, check out this BP Mets piece from Jeffrey Paternostro. This was my first time watching Humphreys (I'll have to go back to check his first start, but the second start was not on MiLB.tv), and he looked a little too polished for the SAL. The Rome announcers didn't share any pitch velocities, but Humphreys was locating his fastball and curveball well most of the start, and really only labored during the fifth. I'm not trying to compare the stuff, but the way he controlled the game reminded me of how Andrew Church pitched with the Fireflies last season, and Church only stuck around for 9 starts before a promotion to St. Lucie, so I wouldn't be surprised if Humphreys gets an early promo this year too.

Humphreys started his outing with a strikeout of Randy Ventura on 5 pitches.

He then finished the first with a strikeout Cristian Pache - Pache is the Braves center fielder, and the Rome announcers couldn't stop gushing about his defense throughout the series.

Yepez would be a thorn in Humphreys back later in the game, but he went down swinging in his first AB to start the second.

Humphreys then made it three in a row when he struck out Anthony Concepcion on four pitches - only three were shown, so I added a bonus GIF.
