Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s overcame a big early deficit to scratch out a close win over
Sacramento Monday night. The defense faltered behind Tyler Pill with two outs
in the 2nd, which allowed things to snowball temporarily, but Pill
bounced back to turn in 4 more scoreless frames after falling behind 5-0. A
River Cats error helped keep the 51s 5th alive long enough for them
to come back and tie the game at 5. Catcher Xorge Carrillo homered leading off
that frame and would play an even bigger role later in this one. Check out his
highlights and more in the full recap below.
Pill
had to work hard to get through the first two innings, throwing a total of 53
pitches before the 3rd inning started. He got out of the 1st
inning thanks to some nice defense behind him on the infield.
Unfortunately,
Pill’s infield defense faltered at the wrong time in the 2nd. With
two outs and two in scoring position, Kelby Tomlinson hit a grounder to Amed
Rosario that should’ve ended the frame, but it was bobbled instead. The next
two batters crushed the ball to deep center field for a two run double and RBI
triple – the triple bounced off of Desmond Jennings glove in CF. Michael Morse
knocked in the final run to make it 5-0 after 2.
Tyler
Pill singled and Gavin Cecchini picked up his 5th double of the
season in the 3rd, but Las Vegas left the bases loaded in the frame.
The
51s turned three double plays against the River Cats Monday, starting with this
one in the 3rd.
As
mentioned, Carrillo sparked the 51s big rally with a solo blast. Pill followed
with his second hit of the game, and the next five 51s batters reached safely
too. Rosario came up in the first bases loaded situation of the frame, and he
kept things moving with a nubber for an infield single. Dominic Smith followed
with a two run single into RF to make it a 5-4 game. Carrillo capped the
scoring in the frame when he took a bases loaded walk, but Las Vegas still left
the bases loaded again.
Pill
finished his night by retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, and had
that one base runner erased on a double play in the 6th.
Cory
Burns came in for the 7th and immediately gave the lead back. A one
out walk stole 2B and came around on Jae-Gyun Hwang’s RBI single. Burns had his
back against the wall in the frame when Morse hit into an inning ending 6-4-3
double play to bail him out.
But
Las Vegas was quick to respond thanks to Jennings, who kept the 8th
alive with a single. Cecchini and Rosario followed with singles to get him home
and tie the game at 6.
Ben
Rowen came in for the 8th and struck out two during a perfect frame.
The
51s momentum leaked into the 9th, when Travis Taijeron stole the
winning run from Sacramento. Taijeron led off the frame with a walk, stole 2B,
and then came home on Xorge Carrillo’s third RBI of the night.
Although
he has allowed 7 unearned runs this year, Tyler Pill still hasn’t allowed an
earned run in 2017, which is something. And although he couldn’t pick Rosario
up after the error in the 2nd, he did pick the team up with the way
he pitched through the 6th, which opened the door for Las Vegas to
come back. He’s still probably not more than organization depth, but he’s
pitching with more control than he has the past two seasons. It might also help
that he’s pitching for Manager Pedro Lopez in the PCL this year, as Pedro has seen
how successful Pill can be while managing him in Double-A the past few seasons.
