Recapish
Mickey
Jannis retired the first 14 Fisher Cats batters in a row and took a no-hitter
bid into the 6th, as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies rolled to a 7-3
win Saturday afternoon. Matt Oberste went deep for the first time in 2017, but
it was the pair of Binghamton catchers, Tomas Nido (who was at DH) and Colton
Plaia, that led the way on offense with 3 hits apiece.
The
Rumble Ponies offense was hot early, which led to 3 PA over the first 3 innings
for leadoff hitter Champ Stuart. Champ came through again in the leadoff spot,
reaching base 3 times and extending his hit streak to 5 straight games. Tomas
Nido was moved up to the 3-hole for the game and provided a big spark,
finishing just a homerun shy of the cycle. It was his second straight game at
DH, so maybe the Ponies are letting him get comfortable at the plate without
having to focus about being behind the plate. You can check out a full breakdown of the Ponies scoring highlights below.
Jannis
benefitted from an aggressive Fisher Cats approach over the first 4+ innings,
but found himself walking a fine line over the final three frames, when he
issued all 4 of his walks. The Fisher Cats had their best chance in the 6th
inning, as they had runners on the corners with nobody out. Fortunately, Jannis buckled
down and struck out the next two batters before a weak groundout ended the
frame. He left in the 7th with two runners on base and reliever
Corey Taylor allowed them both to score before he could get the last two outs.
Although it was messy for them, Corey Taylor
and Logan Taylor combined to hold on for the 7-3 win. These two teams wrap up
their series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM, with P.J. Conlon (2-1, 2.82 ERA)
scheduled to start for the Rumble Ponies.
As a side-note, the Fisher Cats
Manager was tossed after Nido’s triple in the 7th – the broadcasters
thought they were still mad about the Guillorme walk – and then Friday night’s
starter Shane Dawson was tossed… for throwing a trash can and a chair onto the
field, pretty close to where Manager Luis Rojas was standing too.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
After
singling in his final AB on Friday, Luis Guillorme started his Saturday with a
single. He went to third on a double from Tomas Nido, but probably would’ve
scored had the double stayed in the park. He did score one batter later, when
Matt Oberste hit a sac fly to RF.
Patrick
Biondi picked up a one out single in the 2nd inning, went to 3B on Colton
Plaia’s first hit of the game, and then came around to score the games second
run on an E4.
Oberste
started the Binghamton 3-run 3rd with a solo blast to LF, his first
of the year. Biondi would reach on a fielder’s choice a few batters later, and
then the Ponies two out rally began. Biondi stole 2B (he’s now 7-7 this year)
and came around to score on Jio Mier’s fifth double of the year. Plaia followed
with an RBI single to knock in Mier, and then Champ Stuart picked up his only
hit in the game.
In
the 4th, Kevin Kaczmarski reached on a bunt single with two outs but
stayed put at 1B.
Nido
led off the 6th with a single hit towards the gap that was misplayed
for an E8, as Nido hustled to 2B. He was stranded at 3B in the frame after the
final two Rumble Ponies batters went down on strikes.
Plaia
capped his big day with a double that two-hopped the wall in left center field
to start the 7th. After Guillorme worked a walk, Nido would put an
exclamation point on his big day with a two-run triple off the RF wall.
