Recapish
Early
efforts from Rafael Montero were nearly thwarted by an Isotopes 6th
inning rally, but then Travis Taijeron crashed a two-run double off the RF wall
in the 8th to give the 51s a late lead, and Paul Sewald swooped in
for his fourth save of the year. The win improved Las Vegas’ record to 11-12,
and they have a chance to even their series with a win against Albuquerque
Sunday afternoon (or at noon if you’re reading this on the West Coast).
In
his now two starts since being demoted, Rafael Montero has torn up the PCL.
Over 10.1 IP, he’s allowed just 2 R on 4 H with 16 K (10 K/Sw): 3 BB, with an
11.8% Swinging strike rate and 26.4% Whiff/Swing rate, while needing just 15.6
P/IP. Of the 19 balls in play against him, 9 have been groundballs (47%) and 1
has been a pop up. So, out of 39 batters faced, 26 (67%) have ended their PA
against Montero with a strikeout, ground ball, or pop up.
I’m not going to try and convince
Mets fans that he’s worth another shot (especially after just two starts), but
I will point out that outside of a 4-start stretch last May (2 starts where he
dominated like this and 2 that were more good results/bad process), Montero
hasn’t pitched this well in Triple-A since 2014. He was a good pitcher down the
stretch for the Mets in 2014, injured for most of 2015, never really right in
2016 (when he had to go down to Double-A), and had a rough start out of the
Mets pen this year. He’s still just 26, still has a 93+ MPH fastball, and his
slider was hitting 86 MPH Saturday (per the radio). If nothing else, other
teams are probably still interested in him as a secondary piece in a trade.
As for this start, Montero rode
into the 6th inning on a high of 0 hits allowed, but left with his
buzz officially killed after allowing a game-tying two run homerun to Jordan
Patterson. He scattered 3 walks over the first 4 innings, but had retired 6
straight before allowing a single and homer to his final two batters of the
night. Before the 6th, Montero spent most of the night ahead in the
count (got ahead 0-1 69% of the time over the first 5 innings), and tried to
keep hitters off balance with his offspeed stuff when behind. When he left, he
had as many hits as the Isotopes.
The 51s got the scoring started with
the first of two Amed Rosario created runs. Rosario led off with a well-struck
single that deflected off the third baseman’s glove. He then stole 2B (his 7th
stolen base of the year), went to 3B on when Dom Smith flew out to RF, and
scored on a Travis Taijeron sac fly. Hmm, a young Mets SS who can create runs
with his speed… sound familiar?
Las Vegas doubled their lead with
another run in the 5th. Rafael Montero found the gap in left center field
for a double and then came home when Noel Cuevas misplayed a Desmond Jennings
hit for a triple. Unfortunately, Jennings was left in scoring position for the
second time in the game.
After Patterson homered in the 6th,
Ben Rowen replaced Montero, but the Isotopes rally wasn’t over. Stephen
Cardullo doubled and scored on a Chris Denorfia single, and then Daniel Castro
came through with a two out single to make it a 4-2 game.
The 51s quickly got that run back
in their half of the 6th when Amed Rosario led off the frame with a
solo blast to LF. Smith followed with his second hit of the game, but he would
be caught trying to steal 2B to end the frame. It was Rosario’s third straight
multi-hit game and 13th overall this season, in just his 22nd
game of the year.
Manager Pedro Lopez stuck with
Rowen for the 7th and was rewarded with a quick 1-2-3 inning on 3
groundouts induced by the side-arming righty. Beck Wheeler kept the strong
pitching going with a perfect 8th, which opened the door for
Taijeron’s heroics.
Jennings started the 51s 8th
by working a walk against reliever Johendi Jiminian. After Jiminian retired the
next two batters, Jennings stood at 3B and red-hot Dominic Smith stood at the
plate. The Isotopes chose to intentionally walk Smith to get to Taijeron, and
Taijeron punished them by knocking in both runners with his double. Smith gets knocked
for his speed, but with two outs and the game on the line, he was running his
hardest to score from 1B on the play, and it wasn’t a close of a play at the
plate.
With the lead again in hand, Las
Vegas turned to Paul Sewald for the save, and the future Terry Collins play
thing worked around a one out single for his 4th save of the year,
striking out Ryan Hanigan along the way. Looking for a series split Sunday, the
51s turn to Tyler Pill (0-0, 0.00 ERA over 4 starts and 22.1 IP between AA/AAA)
for the finale at 3:05 PM.
