            Early efforts from Rafael Montero were nearly thwarted by an Isotopes 6^th inning rally, but then Travis Taijeron crashed a two-run double off the RF wall in the 8^th to give the 51s a late lead, and Paul Sewald swooped in for his fourth save of the year. The win improved Las Vegas’ record to 11-12, and they have a chance to even their series with a win against Albuquerque Sunday afternoon (or at noon if you’re reading this on the West Coast).

            In his now two starts since being demoted, Rafael Montero has torn up the PCL. Over 10.1 IP, he’s allowed just 2 R on 4 H with 16 K (10 K/Sw): 3 BB, with an 11.8% Swinging strike rate and 26.4% Whiff/Swing rate, while needing just 15.6 P/IP. Of the 19 balls in play against him, 9 have been groundballs (47%) and 1 has been a pop up. So, out of 39 batters faced, 26 (67%) have ended their PA against Montero with a strikeout, ground ball, or pop up.

            Mickey Jannis retired the first 14 Fisher Cats batters in a row and took a no-hitter bid into the 6^th, as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies rolled to a 7-3 win Saturday afternoon. Matt Oberste went deep for the first time in 2017, but it was the pair of Binghamton catchers, Tomas Nido (who was at DH) and Colton Plaia, that led the way on offense with 3 hits apiece.

            The Rumble Ponies offense was hot early, which led to 3 PA over the first 3 innings for leadoff hitter Champ Stuart. Champ came through again in the leadoff spot, reaching base 3 times and extending his hit streak to 5 straight games. Tomas Nido was moved up to the 3-hole for the game and provided a big spark, finishing just a homerun shy of the cycle. It was his second straight game at DH, so maybe the Ponies are letting him get comfortable at the plate without having to focus about being behind the plate.             The Binghamton Rumble Ponies spent their Friday night playing catch-up after the New Hampshire Fisher Cats ripped three extra base hits for four runs off Casey Delgado in the 1^st inning. Delgado settled down and gave Binghamton 5.2 strong innings of work after the 1^st, but the early deficit proved too much for the Ponies offense to overcome.

            The heart of the Fisher Cats lineup got to Delgado in the 1^st. Richard Urena sparked the rally with a well-struck double lined into LF, and then, after a walk, Ryan McBroom made it 2-0 with a well-struck double over Champ’s head in CF. Delgado nearly escaped the frame down just 2-0, but then Emilio Guerrero launched a two-run blast to left center field that made it 4-0.

            Jeffrey Paternostro’s weekly Don’t Scout the Statline is up for BP and it is a good read, as expected from Jeff. I’m not saying that just because he used one of my tweets, but because he has good points on Amed Rosario, Luis Guillorme, and the pair of Fireflies starters off to ridiculous starts: Merandy Gonzalez and Jordan Humphreys.

            Brandon Nimmo went 0-2 with two walks while playing all 9 innings in CF during his second rehab appearance.

            Tim Tebow has a good week at the plate and suddenly everyone starts speculating about a possible promotion to the next minor league level. Look, he had one good week at the plate, but he still looks more like a pitcher at the plate than a hitter. He has power in his stroke, which is why the Mets are interested, but you can’t expect him to become Major League ready in under a season. Just because he’s 29 doesn’t mean the Mets will or should rush him – they know how to develop players, trust the #Process. If the Mets and Tebow are serious about Tim Tebow the baseball player, then they’ll take their time at each level and not react to one week of good (or bad) play. That doesn’t mean I expect him to still be playing for Columbia when he turns 30 in August, but I will be surprised if he has even reached Double-A by then.

            Merandy Gonzalez’s ridiculous streak of scoreless innings to start the 2017 season was pushed to 28.1 inning Wednesday afternoon, as Merandy took a shutout into the 8^th inning for the second time in just four starts this season. The Fireflies offense also broke out of their home stand slump (just in time to go back on the road), providing Gonzalez with more than enough offensive support for his fourth straight victory.
