finish ahead of them in the standings, because El Paso has an 8-5 head-to-head
advantage with 3 games left between the two teams. Obviously if the 51s win all
3 games that advantage won’t matter (they’d have to look at runs or whatever
the next tie-breaker is), but if they win all 3 then they will have a 3.5 game
lead in the division with 4 games against Tacoma (65-72) left to play. While it’s
mathematically possible to blow that lead, it’s highly improbable.

division. It won’t be easy for Binghamton from here on out, because they face
the top team in the league for the next 3 games (Reading, who sit at 78-56),
and then head home to host an Altoona (71-64) team battling for a playoff spot
in the West division for their final 4 games. Meanwhile, Trenton (69-65) has 3
left with an eliminated New Britain (64-69) team, and then finishes their
season with 4 against an eliminated New Hampshire (64-68) team. Reading
clinched a playoff spot on Monday night, and the Fightins would face Binghamton
in the first round of the playoffs should they make it, so it’s possible that
they might rest some of their key plays during the rest of the series, in which
case the B-Mets will have caught a break.
