Recap
The
Las Vegas 51s spoiled a great chance to gain some breathing room on the El Paso
Chihuahuas Wednesday night, managing only one run on three behind another
strong start from Tim Stauffer, and losing in extra’s. Stauffer has been a
great veteran presence in the 51s rotation, offering Las Vegas a high number of
quality innings pitched with nearly every start. Unfortunately for Stauffer and
the 51s, El Paso starter Chris Smith was even better on this night, allowing
only 5 base runners in his 6.2 IP, with only a run on the bomb from Travis
Taijeron. With the loss, the 51s lead over El Paso dropped to just a half game
with one series left for each team after they wrap this series up Thursday
night.
One
night after leading off the game with a solo blast, Dilson Herrera tried for a
repeat performance in the 1st Wednesday night, but he would hit the
ball off the end of the bat, and it only
carried to the wall in left center field (where it was caught). Travis Taijeron
did get enough for his 25th homerun of the year in the 4th,
but that was all of the offense Las Vegas could muster in this game. The only
time Las Vegas got a base runner as far as 2B was when Daniel Muno stole 2B
with two outs in the 7th. Offensively, they didn’t do anything to
earn this win.
Stauffer
rolled through the first 5 innings for Las Vegas, but Ramiro Pena and Hector
Gomez connected for doubles in the 6th to get El Paso on the board
and tie the game at 1. The dogs had loaded the bases on 3 soft singles against
Stauffer in the 5th, but he rebounded to strikeout the next two
batters before a groundout to 2B ended the frame.
With
the 51s needing a win in the tight game, this game would come down to bullpen
management, and that has been Wally’s biggest weakness with Las Vegas. Here’s a
recap: Dario Alvarez was only allowed to face two batters; after working around
the inherited runner in the 9th, Vic Black was brought back out for
the 10th inning to face just one batter; Alex Torres was brought in
to face the lefty, but then allowed to stay in for two righties (both would
single off of him); after working around an inherited runner in the 10th,
Chase Bradford was brought back out for the 11th with a switch
hitter (one who has destroyed righties this year and stunk vs. LHP’s),
pinch-hitter, and LHB due up for El Paso, and LHP Chase Huchingson ready in the
bullpen. The 3-inning span was a good example of how inconsistent the 51s
bullpen has been lately, which is likely why they find themselves battling to
hold onto their division lead as the season winds down. The switch hitter who
owns RHP’s this year (Jason Hagerty) would launch a solo blast to left center
field leading off the 11th against Chase Bradford, which gave El
Paso the 2-1 lead that they would win by.
This
series wraps up Thursday night at 10:05 PM, with Seth Lugo (2-1, 3.52 ERA)
scheduled to pitch opposite Daniel McCutchen (8-8, 3.73 ERA), and looking to
keep Las Vegas in 1st place.
