Recap
The
Sand Gnats finished their final regular season as a Savannah franchise Monday
afternoon in Greenville with a win to cap an 84-win season in the SAL. The Sand
Gnats collectively did not have their best day at the plate, but Natanael Ramos
was in the middle of all 3 run scoring innings for Savannah, and the four runs
they scratched out was enough behind some great pitching. Corey Oswalt survived
some loud contact in the 1st inning to give the Sand Gnats 6 great
innings, and then Chris Flexen and Ben Griset combined to hold on over the
final 3 innings. Flexen cruised through his first 2 innings, but the Drive put
up one last regular season fight in the 9th, and Griset had to come in
to get the final out in a bases loaded situation.
The
Sand Gnats head to Asheville Wednesday to begin their playoff series against
the Tourists. Martires Arias is scheduled to pitch in the opener, starting the final playoff run, which will bring one last title home to Savannah!
Natanael
Ramos singled home Michael Katz in the 2nd inning to put the Sand
Gnats up 1-0.
Ramos
sparked the Sand Gnats 5th inning rally with a lead off single.
Vicente Lupo would double him to 3B, and then he came home on a sac fly from
Jonathan Johnson. Lupo would score on the next play, when Rafael Devers
committed a fielding error that allowed Luis Guillorme to reach.
Michael
Katz led off the 9th with a walk, went to 2B on a single from Tomas
Nido, to 3B on a force out from Ramos, and score on a fielder’s choice.
Michael
Chavis sparked the Drive’s only rally with a leadoff single in the 9th
inning. Devers doubled him to 3B, and then an RBI groundout from Andrew
Benintendi brought him home. Danny Mars would bring home Devers with an RBI
single to LF, but the Drive’s rally would come up short.
Defensive Highlights
Luis
Guillorme, Jonathan Johnson, and J.C Rodriguez were strong defensively for
Savannah all season long, and they finished the regular season with some very
nice plays behind Oswalt and Flexen.
