Recap
The
Las Vegas 51s picked up a much needed win Tuesday night against El Paso,
holding off a late comeback from the Chihuahua’s to increase their divisioin
lead back to 1.5 games. Logan Verrett made the start for Las Vegas and held El
Paso to just 3 runs over the first 6 innings, but the last batter he faced
launched a three run bomb to make this game interesting again. El Paso starter
Jason Lane is no stranger to most of the Las Vegas lineup, as the 51s have had
his number since he reached the PCL as a pitcher, and that did not change
Tuesday night. The 51s would build a 6-3 lead against Lane through his 4
innings, and it seemed like this game would finish quietly after they added two
mores runs against Jerry Sullivan in the 6th, but the Chihuahua’s
proved feistier than that.
El
Paso’s game plan against Logan Verrett was clear from the start: attack early,
and swing at anything close. Instead of trying to expand the strike zone to
look for strikeouts, Verrett stuck with his plan of attacking the bottom of the
zone and looking to induce contact early in the AB. Unfortunately, while a lot
of AB’s ended early, which kept Verrett’s pitch count down, too many AB’s ended
with an El Paso hit (11 total, including 2 doubles and 3 homeruns in 29 AB).
Verrett worked around a big threat
in the 1st, stranding runners on 2B and 3B after they got there with
one out. Dilson Herrera then put Las Vegas ahead 1-0 with a leadoff blast in
the 1st inning. After the blast, the 51s would score two more runs
on three El Paso errors in the frame.
Rymer Liriano has consistently been
a thorn in the 51s side this year, and he saved his biggest game for Verrett
Tuesday. Liriano hit a leadoff homerun against Logan in the 2nd
inning, and then launched another solo blast in the 4th inning.
Rocky Gale would double and score later in the 4th to pull El Paso
to within a run, but a two run double from Matt Reynolds in the bottom of the
frame extended the 51s lead to 6-3.
It was poor defense again from El
Paso that led to key insurance runs for Las Vegas in the 6th inning.
Brandon Nimmo led off the frame with a single, and moved around to 3B on a sac
bunt and wild pitch. After Dilson walked and stole 2B, Reynolds followed with a
grounder to 1B, where Cody Decker plays. Decker thought he could get the out at
home, so he didn’t take the safe route by getting Reynolds at 1B. Unfortunately
for him, his throw sailed high and Dilson would come around to score. Had
Decker gone the safe route, maybe Dilson never scores and El Paso comes back to
tie the game at 7, you never know. Hunter Renfroe would hit that three run
homerun off of Verrett to make it an 8-6 game in the 7th, and then
El Paso pulled to within one run when Dario Alvarez issued a bases loaded walk
in the 8th inning, but John Church came out of the pen to save the
day for Las Vegas.
This series continues Wednesday
night at 10:05 PM, with Tim Stauffer (4-0, 2.23 ERA) scheduled to pitch
opposite Chris Smith (5-6, 3.62 ERA).
