Recap
The
B-Mets moved one step closer to the playoffs by holding on for a 7-6 win
against Reading Tuesday night. Binghamton starter Gabriel Ynoa is generally
considered a control specialist, but he was a little wild at times in this one,
although it was the 2 homeruns he allowed that hurt him more than the two walks
issued. Reading starter Ben Lively was rolling the first time through the
Binghamton lineup, allowed a run on three hits the second time through, and
then retired only one of four batters as the lineup turned over for a third
time. Both Ynoa and Lively would be removed with the tying runs on base, and
both bullpens would allow all inherited runners to score in the 6th.
After
allowing the tying run to score in the 6th, Beck Wheeler bounced
back and worked a quick and scoreless 7th to keep the score tied at
5. The game stayed tied until the 9th inning, when T.J. Rivera
sparked the game winning two run rally with a one out single to CF. Paul Sewald
would make those runs hold up in the 9th, and Binghamton walked away
one game closer to a postseason berth.
Rivera
contributed nicely on offense, so he was still a net positive in this game, but
his limited defense at SS has hurt the B-Mets. He doesn’t have the range to
make the plays that Gavin Cecchini can, and he doesn’t have the arm to be a
shortstop. Cecchini hurt the B-Mets 20+ times with errors this year, but some of
those errors were on balls Rivera can’t even get to, and Cecchini has made a
lot of very good plays this year too.
Check out scoring details and some highlights from this game below. This
series continues Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Tyler Pill (5-0, 1.95 ERA)
scheduled to pitch opposite Joely Rodriguez (5-3, 5.20 ERA).
Andrew
Knapp put Reading on top with a two run blast in the 1st.
T.J.
Rivera led off the 4th with a single to LF, and then Vince Belnome’s
second double of the game brought him home to put the B-Mets on the board.
Dylan
Cozens led off the bottom of the 4th with his third homerun of the
year to increase the Reading lead back to two runs.
J.P.
Crawford led of the 5th with an infield single to T.J. Rivera, and
then Destin Hood doubled him home with two outs.
The
B-Mets loaded the bases with one out in the 6th on a walk to Josh
Rodriguez, and then singles from Brock Peterson and Vince Belnome. After a
pitching change, Joe Benson doubled home a pair of runs, and then Jared King
singled home two more, which gave Binghamton a 5-4 lead.
Angelo
Mora led off the 6th with a double to RF against Gabriel Ynoa, and
then K.C. Serna brought him home by reaching on a bunt single to J Rod against
Beck Wheeler.
T.J.
Rivera’s third hit of the game sparked the B-Mets 9th inning rally
against Stephen Shackleford. J Rod followed with a single of his own, and a
wild pitch from Shackleford moved both runners into scoring position with just
one out. Binghamton then jumped ahead for good on a sac fly from Brock, and
picked up an insurance run on Belnome’s fourth hit of the game.
Serna
and Crawford would hit consecutive singles with one out in the 9th
inning, but Reading could only get one run out of the situation on an RBI
groundout from Knapp. Paul Sewald ended the game with a strikeout of Art
Charles to pick up his 23rd save of the season.
Defensive Highlights
J.P
Crawford made a pair of nice plays for Reading in this game, which is really
nothing new for him.
