Recap
The
Binghamton Mets began their opening round playoff series with Reading Wednesday
night at home by taking a 9-4 loss behind Tyler Pill. Pill was also the game
one starter in both playoff series the B-Mets won last year, and he’d allow 5 R
in the first game of last year’s title run, but the B-Mets were able to come
back and win that game. His struggles in this game came against the 2-3-4
batters of the Reading lineup: J.P. Crawford, Andrew Knapp, and EL MVP Brock
Stassi, who nearly hit two three run homeruns off of Pill (settling for just
the one). Those three would go 7-8 with two doubles, a homerun and a walk against
Pill, and they were the driving forces in the two Reading rallies against Pill.
For Reading, Zach Eflin went to
work after being handed a 4-0 lead before he even took the mound. This was his
first start against Binghamton this year, and he induced a lot of bad contact.
Vince Belnome launched Eflin’s only mistake for a solo blast, and the rest of
the hits he allowed were singles. Dylan Cozens also had a nice day at the
plate, providing two RBI doubles as he continues his assault of Binghamton pitching
– he went 4-14 with two homeruns during the 4-game series these two teams
played in “Baseball town” last week.
Beck Wheeler was the first to
relieve Pill, and Reading would tack on a pair of runs against him, but then
Adam Kolarek, Josh Smoker, and Akeel Morris threw scoreless innings to finish
the game.
Check out the scoring details and
game highlights below. This series continues Thursday night at 6:35 PM, with
Robert Gsellman scheduled to pitch opposite Jake Thompson in game two. Jake
Thompson is now the best pitching prospect in the Phillies system (ranked #2
overall by MLB), and he beat the B-Mets on 8/31: he finished the season with a
1.80 ERA in 45 IP after being traded to Philly, with 33 H and a .569 OPS
allowed, and 34 K: 12 BB (166 BF). While Gsellman is not on the same prospect
level as Thompson, he’s arguably the top pitching prospect left in the system
once Matz officially graduates off the rankings and he lost to Reading in his
second AA start: he finished the season with a 2.45 ERA over 51.1 IP, with 43 H
and a .534 OPS allowed, and 21 K: 100 BB (209 BF).
Scoring Highlights
Reading
jumped out to a big 4-0 lead in the 1st thanks to 3 singles and a
pair of doubles. J.P. Crawford sparked the rally with a one out single to CF,
and then Andrew Knapp quickly followed with a single pulled into RF. Brock
Stassi was next, and he just missed a homerun to RF – it hit off the top of the
wall – but the double was good enough to bring home JPC. After Pill picked up
the second out of the frame, Dylan Cozens provided the biggest hit of the
frame, driving in two with a double over Brock’s head in LF. Harold Martinez
followed with an RBI single to LF, but he would be caught in between 1B and 2B
when the throw home was cut off, and eventually tagged out to end the inning –
this would not be his only inning-ending base running blunder.
In
the bottom of the 2nd, Vince Belnome got the B-Mets on the board
with a solo blast to right center field.
Reading
was threatening with two on (1B and 2B) and two outs in the 4th
inning when Nick Williams hit a soft liner that was just out of T.J. Rivera’s
reach for a single. It might’ve led to a bases loaded situation for JPC, but
with the play right in front of Harold Martinez, he decided to go for the
plate, and was thrown out by a mile after T.J. recovered the ball down the
line. Rivera then started the bottom of the 4th with a soft single
hit up the middle. It looked like the B-Mets might get something going in the frame when Josh Rodriguez appeared to reach on a dribbler up the 1B line, but he was ruled out of the base paths.
The
B-Mets were only trailing 4-1 entering the 5th, but the first 3 AB’s
were over so fast, and suddenly the B-Mets were trailing 7-1. JPC led off with
a single up the middle that Amed Rosario fielded but couldn’t get a handle on –
initially ruled an error but later changed. Andrew Knapp followed with a
ground-rule double to LF, which put two runners on for Brock Stassi, just like
in the 1st inning. Unfortunately for the B-Mets, this time Stassi
would make sure to hit the ball far enough that no OF wall could contain it.
Beck
Wheeler took over for Pill in the 6th, and he quickly found himself
in a one out, bases loaded situation (walk, single, intentional walk). Reading
would tack on two more runs in the frame on a sac fly from Cam Perkins and
another RBI double from Cozens.
Jeff
McNeil was used as a pinch-hitter in the 6th inning, and he led off
the frame with a single to RF, but he’d get no further than 2B.
In
the 7th, Joe Benson, Xorge Carrillo, and Amed Rosario hit
consecutive two out singles to bring home a run. Also, check out a side view of Rosario grounding out early in the game
In
the 8th, a leadoff walk and an E5 opened the door for a possible
comeback inning for the B-Mets, but they could only get two home on RBI singles
from Josh Rodriguez and Joe Benson.
Defensive Highlights
Amed Rosario made a couple of nice plays at SS for Binghamton.
L.J. Mazzilli was tested all night, handling this hot shot among many chances.
Xorge Carrillo continues to make catcher defense look easy.
