Recap
The
B-Mets fell behind 2 games to 0 in their best-of-5 series with Reading Friday
night after Fightins starter Jake Thompson carved through their lineup with the
best start of his young career. Thompson put on a pitching clinic, working
ahead in the count all night, inducing a lot of weak contact early in AB’s, and
breaking out a nasty slider if he got to two strikes. As you can see in Table 2
below, Thompson only needed more than 14 pitches for an inning in the 9th,
when he allowed a double to L.J. Mazzilli and walked Josh Rodriguez. He entered
that 9th inning with a chance for a ‘Maddux’ (complete game shutout
with less than 100 pitches thrown), but that’s when Binghamton finally stepped
up and started making him work for his outs – talk about too little too late.
Meanwhile, B-Mets starter Robert
Gsellman got in trouble by consistently falling behind the Reading batters
throughout his start, and he was leaving his fastball up, which led to a lot of
hard contact. Per the B-Mets announcer, Gsellman was getting a good number of
swings-and-misses with his changeup, which is great to see, but he was missing
his groundball touch. Reading might’ve opened this game up against Gsellman in
the 3rd inning, but Joe Benson and Josh Rodriguez made great diving
plays in the OF to rob Reading of a pair of hits – the entire game was full of
defensive gems (see below). When Gsellman got into bases loaded trouble in the
5th inning, manager Pedro Lopez decided to bring in Jeff Walters
with just one out. Walters induced an inning ending 4-6-3 double play, which
could’ve been a huge moment for Binghamton if they came back in this game.
This series moves to Reading for up
to 3 more games starting Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Gabriel Ynoa is scheduled
to pitch for Binghamton opposite Ben Lively, with Reading moving on to the Championship
round if they win any of the next 3 games.
Brock
Stassi led off the 2nd inning with a double over J Rod’s head for
Reading, and then Cam Perkins followed with an RBI single to RF.
J.P.
Crawford hit a one out single in the 3rd inning, went to 2B when
Andrew Knapp was walked, and then scored on another RBI single from Cam
Perkins.
Nick
Williams launched a solo blast to RF with two outs in the 6th
inning.
The
B-Mets three hits.
Defensive Highlights
Amed
Rosario handled the first two plays behind Robert Gsellman Friday night,
including a gem to rob J.P. Crawford of a hit, and then he would be tested again in the 8th.
Joe
Benson threw a runner out at home for the second out of the 2nd
inning, and then went full extension for a great catch in deep left center
field to start the 3rd inning.
Josh
Rodriguez came in for a diving catch to end the 3rd.
J.P. Crawford made a pair of nice plays defensively for Reading.
This double play started by L.J. Mazzilli could've been a game-changer for Binghamton, but their bats never got going. Mazzilli also did a nice job tracking down a pop up in the Bermuda triangle area of right center field.
