Recap:

It was a beautiful day for baseball at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Pa, so it worked out nicely that these two teams had a double header on tap after a rainout Friday night. The B-Mets got off to a quick start offensively in game 1 and never looked back. Matthew Bowman picked up his third win of the season despite less than stellar control, as Erie was unable to make much hard contact off of him. Kyle Johnson had the golden bat of the day, getting things started in the 1st and providing the big hit in the 2nd.
Erie starter Jeff Ferrell looked on pace for a short outing as he struggled through a long, 35 pitch 2nd inning while the B-Mets batted around. However, aside from the double to Plaw, he didn’t actually give up a lot of hard contact in the inning – the HR barely got out and was off the end of Johnson’s bat. He’d settle down to strike out the last two hitters of the inning before working through the 3rd and 4th innings with 15 pitches.
Meanwhile, Bowman was missing around the plate a lot all day, but not giving up any hard contact. He works rather quickly on the mound, often staring down the hitter in ready position as they step in, and shows his back to the batter when pitching out of the windup. Despite not missing by much, Erie batters were willing to just keep taking pitches for balls against Bowman, which drove his pitch count up some. His strikeouts came on down and in sliders to lefties, both very nice pitches.
With his pitch count getting higher in the 6th, and Erie threatening with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, B-Mets manager Pedro Lopez decided to go to lefty Adam Kolarek, who would come in for the last 5 outs. Kolarek would get out of a tough jam in the 6th by getting Moya to pop out and Green to ground out, both to the most sure-handed fielder out there, Wilfredo Tovar. After Matt Clark added an insurance HR in the top of the 7th, Kolarek would make quick work of Erie in the 9th for his first save of the season.
Binghamton has Darin Gorski scheduled for game 2, ready to begin shortly after this game ended.
