Recap:
It
was a bittersweet victory Monday night for the Brooklyn Cyclones, as they
watched the Lowell Spinners come up just short in their 2 out, 9th
inning comeback attempt against the Connecticut Tigers. With the victory, the
Tigers find themselves going to the NYPL playoffs as the Wild Card
representative, a spot the Cyclones were in control of heading into the final
week. If the Cyclones had managed just one victory against Tri-City last week
(or against the Tigers at any point), they would have controlled their destiny
heading into the final day of the season, but instead it was the Tigers who had
that luxury, and this time they made it count.
Casey
Meisner was great over his five innings Monday night, getting ahead in the
count often (first-pitch strikes to 13/18 batters), and staying economical with
his pitch count. He couldn’t continue his double-digit strikeout streak going,
but that may have been a consequence of pitching on the last day of the season.
As with the Sand Gnats game in Rome from Monday, the Yankees batters were up
there to swing for contact Monday night, leading to more contact early in the
at bats. Meisner finishes his season with the Cyclones red hot over his last
six starts: 1.51 ERA over 35.2 IP with 31 hits allowed, a 38 SO: 6 BB (26.6 K%:
4.2 BB%) ratio, and a .589 OPS against. From what I’ve heard and read, it seems
that Casey has improved his change-up and curveball significantly this season,
and that he now feels comfortable throwing all three pitches in any count. It’s
great to see how much he’s improved this year, and I look forward to watching
him pitch for Savannah to start 2015.
The
Cyclones offense couldn’t get much going Monday night, but they were able to
scratch out a run in three different innings, which was more than enough for
Meisner and the Cyclones best bullpen arms. Jhoan Urena got the 2nd
inning rally going with a single to CF.
Tomas
Nido followed with a single of his own.
Sandwiched
between two strikeouts, Pedro Perez would reach on a fielding error to load the
bases. JC Rodriguez came up with two outs and pulled a single into RF to score
Urena from 3B. Unfortunately, Nido was gunned down trying to score from 2B on
the play, putting an end to the rally with the top of the lineup due up.
The camera couldn't follow the throw well, but Nido was toast at the plate |
Amed
Rosario picked up his 77th hit with Brooklyn in the 3rd,
good for third best in the NYPL.
Pedro
Perez got the 5th inning rally started with a single back up the
middle.
After
Michael Bernal struck out for the 95th time this year with Brooklyn
(third most in the NYPL), Perez stole 2B and then Rodriguez advanced him to 3B
on a groundout. John Mora came up with the big two out hit in the 5th,
which gave the Cyclones some much-needed insurance.
Urena
picked up his league-best 85th hit in the 6th.
Adrian
Abreu got the 7th inning rally started with the only hit of the
inning, advancing to 2B on a wild throw from Ty McFarland. Abreu would come
home to score later in the inning on a Rodriguez groundout.
The
Cyclones bullpen was equally impressive in the final game of the season, facing
just two over the minimum during the final four innings. Shane Bay came in to
pick up the save in the 9th, his 15th save in 15
opportunities this year – tied (with Carlos Pinales) for most in the NYPL, and
the most without a blown save.
