As the first half of the FSL season come to an end, the All Star game
rosters have been announced, and there are several Mets who made the team.
The PSL Mets came into the season
with arguably the most talented roster within the farm system, but it was an
extremely young roster for the FSL – Dominic Smith, Amed Rosario, Jhoan Urena,
and Marcos Molina were among the youngest players in the league at the start of
the season. They’ve had an up-and-down season in the standings, with several
losses blown by rehabbing Mets relievers, but they sit at .500, which is good
for 2nd place in the FSL South division. A few key players led the
Mets production early, and now those guys have been recognized with All Star
game nods.
The Florida State League All Star
game is scheduled for June 20th at 7:00 PM, and it will take place
at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie. The following four Mets were selected for
the initial FSL South All Star roster, although two of them are already playing
in Binghamton, so won’t be participating.
Michael Conforto was the big name
on the roster, and one of the biggest names in the league, as few guys have
such a clear Major League upside at the A+ ball level. Conforto his
.283/.350/.462 over 206 PA, with a 12.6 K%: 8.3 BB% and 19 extra base hits (12
doubles, 7 homeruns), which was good for a 141 wRC+. You can see from his FSL
spray charts below that he has no problem using the whole field. I don’t think
he minds playing everyday in AA for an extra three weeks over playing in this
game.

Robert Gsellman had a nearly
perfect first half with St. Lucie, with his results above average across the
board, except for his average 18.9 K%. He gained some national attention when
BA writer Jeff Moore caught a few of his starts and started to swoon, but he’s
always been a polished pitcher within the system to keep an eye on. He was
hardly being challenged, and John Gant was a little overmatched after skipping
the FSL, so it made sense to switch their roles even if Gsellman misses the
ASG.
Jeff McNeil has been one of the
best hitters in the FSL this year, although he hasn’t hit for much power.
Overall, he’s up to .344/.398/.417 over 216 PA, with 10 extra base hits (7
doubles, 2 triples, 1 homerun) and a 12.5 K%: 6.9 BB%, which is good for a 150
wRC+. Although his overall numbers have taken a huge step forward with St.
Lucie this year, it appears that all of the gains have been from his .120 point
gain in BABIP, as his ISO is the same, and his K: BB rates have gone the wrong
way. I’d guess that McNeil is wearing a Mets jersey for Binghamton shortly
after the Al star game is over.
Finally, Akeel Morris has been
excelling as the Mets closer this year, with 10 saves, including 6 two-inning
saves. He has an impressive 36.8 K% and .097 AVG against, but runners still get
on base against him via the walk too often (12.3% walk rate). Especially when
you consider his status on the Mets 40-man roster, Morris should be a lock for
Binghamton during the second half of the season.
While these are the initial guys to
make the roster, some spots may open up due to promotions around the league,
and another trio of PSL Mets players may have a case to fill in. First baseman
Dominic Smith has been on a tear since May 12th, with 18 doubles and
a bomb in 106 PA, good for a .340/.377/550 slash. Shortstop Amed Rosario had a
.318/.370/.455 slash over 119 PA in May, with 7 doubles, 4 triples, and some
top-notch defense. At 24, Colton Plaia is a little older for the FSL, but
catchers get some age lee-way, and his .757 OPS is tied for 20th
among qualified FSL players (which includes at least three players who have
already been promoted to AA). UPDATE: It appears that those spots have already been filled, check out the official roster here,
The Sand Gnats are really enjoying
the month of June, as they’ve won 6 of 7 games, and two of their players have
been awarded player of the week honors. Player of the Week Wuilmer Becerra was
off to a solid start in the SAL through mid-May, but he’s turned it up to
another level since, and was the best hitter in the SAL during the first week
of June. He had a hit in the first 6 games of the week, going 12-28 overall,
with 6 doubles and 2 homeruns, which is good for a 1.324 OPS. He has a 1.095
OPS over his last 15 games, but his walk rate is actually down during that
span, and is one of the bigger weaknesses in his game. Pitcher of the Week
Scarlyn Reyes has been solid for Savannah this year, but his 7-shutout innings
against first place Greenville was definitely his best start so far, as he
allowed only 5 base runners in his outing.
