Recap
The
51s finally ended their long losing streak at 10 games Saturday night behind
Tyler Pill’s best home start of 2015. Pill had struggled at Cashman Field this
year, but had his best start of the year against this El Paso team, and was
able to repeat that success in this start. Wilfredo Tovar gave the 51s an early
lead when he hit the second pitch in the bottom of the 1st for a
bomb to left center field. El Paso would string together consecutive two out
hits (single, double) in the top of the 2nd to tie the game, but
that was all the damage they would manage against Pill, who had good command
over the first 5 innings, but then walked the first two in the 6th.
The 51s would sieze the lead back in the 5th on consecutive doubles
from Matt Reynolds and Johnny Monell, and then extend their lead to 9-3 with a
big 6th. The first two Las Vegas batters were actually retired in
the 6th, but Wally Backman sent Jayce Boyd to the plate to pinch-hit
for Pill, and he’d start the biggest rally of the game with a single to RF. What
followed was some of the worst pitching you could ever see, as the next four batters
reached on 3 BB’s and a HBP. After El Paso made their second pitching change of
the inning, Alex Castellanos worked a nice 7-pitch AB, ending it with a long
grand slam to LF.
The Chihuahua’s would add 3 runs combined against the first two Las Vegas
pitchers out of the pen, but then Vic Black came in and worked a perfect 9th
(details below), sandwiching a strikeout between a pair of soft fly outs to LF.
The first fly out was hit shallow enough that Reynolds had camped under it
first and started waving his hands to call off Allen, but Allen once again
failed to communicate with a teammate, forcing Reynolds to bail out with a
forward dive to avoid a collision. During the road trip, Allen had twice failed
to communicate with center fielder Cory Vaughn on some fly balls that should go
to the center fielder 100% of the time: cutting him off on a sac fly when Vaughn
had the much better angle and has a much better arm, and not yielding to him on
a fly ball that Vaughn caught, which caused a minor collision that could’ve
been much worse.
The
series continues Sunday at 3, with Matt Bowman scheduled to pitch for Las
Vegas.
