Recapish

The Binghamton Mets bullpen blew another late lead Thursday afternoon in Erie, dropping the team back to 10 games under .500 and missing an opportunity to convert the sweep. The B-Mets middle infield combo of Phillip Evans at SS and L.J. Mazzilli at 2B had a very nice day, combining for most of the Binghamton offense and some solid defense up the middle.
The B-Mets were in control of this game from early until the very end thanks to a big 2nd inning. Mazzilli launched his first Double-A homerun to cap a 4-run frame and then Mickey Jannis went to work.

May Stat Review: Binghamton Mets

Pedro Lopez’s crew finished the month of May with a 9-21 record

The B-Mets struggled to score runs in May, and the dropped like a lead rock in the EL Eastern Division standings. They sit at 20-30 on the season, which puts them 13 games out of 1st place, and just 2.5 games ahead of Portland for the cellar spot. The pitchers didn’t exactly standout throughout the month either, but the B-Mets left enough LOBsters on the basepaths to feed the big city of Binghamton. Below I’ve posted everyone’s May statline, with some comments added for each player.

May

MVP: Matt Oberste, and it’s really not even close. Oberste’s 130 wRC+ is tied for 10th best among active players in the Eastern League, and he posted a 144 wRC+ in May.

Cy: Logan Taylor. Only 3 starters threw more innings than Taylor, and none stood out as much as Taylor. There's not an obvious 40-man spot for him right now, but wouldn't be surprised if he finishes the year in the majors.

Fireman: Since I gave Taylor the Cy, I’m giving the nod here to Akeel Morris, who posted a big bounceback month for the B-Mets.

Offense

Matt Oberste - 109 PA, 0.313/0.367/0.495, 11 R, 9 2B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 7 BB, 2 HBP, 1 SF, 19 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 10% SwStr, 22.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.359 BABIP
Oberste was finally shifted to third base in May and didn’t do anything to suggest he needs to be moved off the bag anytime soon. He’s going to be below average at the hot corner for now, but he’s made most of the plays you expect, and his bat has made up for the rest.

Phillip Evans - 51 PA, 0.333/0.333/0.451, 5 R, 6 2B, 6 RBI, 9 K, 9.4% SwStr, 16.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.1 Pitches/PA, 0.405 BABIP
Evans had a rough first week in Double-A and would miss a week in May with a minor injury, but he was one of the few bright spots for the B-Mets in the month. He made some sparkling plays at SS and 3B, and has been a very good line drive hitter. The one complaint about his May is that he walked 0 times.

Recapish

The hits finally started falling for the B-Mets in their Tuesday night opener against Erie, and then they never stopped, as Binghamton kept tacking on until they ran out of outs. Binghamton starter Robert Gsellman wasn’t at his sharpest, but he was able to get the big outs when he needed them outside of the 3rd inning. Logan Taylor and Akeel Morris were very sharp over the final 3 innings, picking up 6 K’s as they finished off the Sea Wolves. Jayce Boyd was activated before the game and made his 2016 debut in LF while batting third.
Gsellman really had to battle through the first 3 innings, when he threw 2/3 of his pitches and surrendered the B-Mets early 1-0 lead. He stranded runners on the corners in the 1st inning but would have no such luck in the 3rd. With one out and Harold Castro on 2B, four Sea Wolves batters reached safely for a pair of runs. Jacoby Jones provided the big hit when he doubled off the wall in LF for the first run. Gsellman then issued a walk and HBP before Casey Frawley knocked in the second run on a single to Jayce Boyd in LF. Erie was still threatening with the bases loaded, but the B-Mets turned a 4-6-3 double play behind Gsellman to end the frame.
Binghamton then scored at least one run in each of their final six trips to the plate, making this game a laugher by the end. The double play started a streak of 9 straight set down by Gsellman, and he left after 6 with his team comfortably ahead 6-2.
I break down the B-Mets scoring and good pitching with highlights below, so enjoy! This series continues Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Casey Delgado (2-2, 4.79 ERA) scheduled to make his 5th start of the year, and the bats looking to keep the good feels going.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

The B-Mets struck first with a run on three straight singles and a sac fly in the 2nd inning. Maikis De La Cruz, Xorge Carrillo, and Stefan Sabol loaded them up, and L.J. Mazzilli hit the fly ball to CF.

Matt Oberste led off the 4th with a single and eventually came around to score on a Sabol groundout. The B-Mets ran a successful hit-and-run play with Carrillo at the plate in the frame, which led to the X-Man’s second hit of the game.

Dominic Smith singled home Derrik Gibson for the B-Mets 5th inning run.

The B-Mets put up a 3-spot in the 6th thanks to a rally that was driven by a pair of doubles: Sabol’s fourth of the year got things started, and Phillip Evans doubled home two in the frame.

Stefan Sabol

Phillip Evans

Binghamton muscled up with a pair of solo blast in the 7th inning: Oberste led off the frame with an oppo taco shot, and Sabol hit one three batters later to come within a triple of the cycle.

Jayce Boyd beat out an infield single for his first hit of the year with two outs in the 8th, and that opened the door for another Binghamton rally. Oberste singled him home two batters later, and Maikis followed with an RBI double.

Evans capped the scoring with an RBI double in the 9th to bring home Derrik Gibson, who had a big 4-hit night for the B-Mets. It was the second double of the night for Evans, and his sixth of the year.
