Perfect Game Profile
Max Wotell is a 2015 LHP/1B/OF with a 6-3 175 lb. frame from Marvin, NC who attends Marvin Ridge HS. Tall wiry high waisted athletic build. Very unusual delivery with a moonwalk across the entire length of the rubber, ends up on far third base side, cross body delivery from a mid 3/4's release point, fast loose arm, lots of energy at release but lots of deception as well, repeated delivery well this outing. Fastball topped at 92 mph, mostly straight but thrown for strikes. Mid-70's curveball gets hard spin and sharp biting action with big 1/7 shape, can freeze hitters with curveball. Nice change up with fading action. Very good athlete, runs a 6.72 and has two-way potential at the college level. Key as always is repeating his hard to repeat mechanics and throwing strikes, which he did this outing. Excellent performance. Verbal commitment to Arizona. ~ 6/12/2014
Max Wotell is a 2015 LHP/1B/OF with a 6-3 175 lb. frame from Marvin, NC who attends Marvin Ridge HS. Large frame, tall athletic build with loose strength. Pitches from a three quarters arm slot, with a fast paced delivery and a live arm. Has increased pace of delivery with good momentum to the plate. Deceptive delivery with drop and drive mechanics, moving parts create distraction. Late life on fastball, pitches downhill, velocity plays up. Good spin on curveball with 1-7 break and good depth, good use of frontside. Also showed high level hitting tools, very quick hands and good bat speed hitting from a spread stance, lifts and pulls the ball with authority, mult-homer batting practice session. Good student, named to National Underclass Main Event top prospect team. ~ 12/28/2013
Max Wotell is a 2015 LHP/OF with a 6-3 175 lb. frame from Marvin, NC who attends Marvin Ridge HS. Loose young athletic build, projects very well physically. Loose extended arm action, low 3/4's release point, smooth and whippy out front. Fastball to 88 mph, lots of running and sinking life at times, steady velocity, big sweeping curveball with good spin. Shows has athleticism as an outfielder, 7.10 runner, sound footwork at the ball, moves well, lots of arm strength. Right handed hitter, busy load, moves into contact, front side hitter, swings hard and creates bat speed, has leverage at contact and power potential. High ceiling talent who really projects as a left handed pitcher, will keep improving. Named to the Top Prospect Team. ~ 12/28/2012

“I think the first pitch I saw him throw in our bullpen was 84 (mph) and with a lot of movement on it,” Mennitt said. “I was like, ‘OK.’ I’m like, ‘This guy is going to be a freak.’ He ended up being a closer for us in ninth grade and he continues to get better. I think that’s why his draft status is growing because they see his potential to get better, too.”
Astro Reaction
I could watch this funky fresh delivery all day. Really like this pick, as he has a lot of upside from the left side, and it looks like the Mets will be able to sign him. His stuff already has a chance to be good from the left side, but if he can stick with that funky delivery, his stuff should play up due to its deception.
Congratulations to NTC alum @maxwotell for being selected by the @Mets with the No. 88 pick in the MLB Draft! pic.twitter.com/SrjBiUC5zD
