Stu Johnson talked to Michael Conforto about how the NY Penn league pitching compares to what he saw at college, his defense, and life as a professional. Brooklyn Paper’s Brooke Lynn says Conforto’s the straw that stirs the drink.

The Augusta Chronicle discussed Savannah Sand Gnats pitcher Logan Taylor, who was found to have a torn elbow ligament after his start on June 27, 2013.

Toby Hyde talked about how Dilson Herrera just keeps on hitting.

Mets Series in Review: @Mariners

Dates: July 21-23, 2014
Results: W 2/3
L 5-2, W 3-1, W 3-2
Current Record: 48-53

Recaps:

MVMet: ∂eGrom and Colon were both very impressive against Seattle, but I’ll give the hat tip to Colon’s perfect game bid.
LVMet: Lagares bat went quiet in CF while Matt ∂en Dekker had another great series for the 51s in nearby Tacoma. I’m a huge Juan fan and think he’ll be fine, but M∂D might be forcing himself somewhere into the OF rotation – though that reflects on more than just Lagares.

T.J. Rivera – 1-3, R, 2B (4), RBI (8), SF
Rylan Sandoval – 1-4, R, HR (1), RBI (11), SO

Recap:

Steven Matz was very sharp Wednesday night, helping the BMets to salvage a game against the only team with a better record in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. Facing the toughest lineup in the EL, Matz looked in control throughout the start, requiring 15 or fewer pitches in every inning except the 4th, when he got out of a 2-outs, bases loaded jam to hold onto a tight 2-1 lead. The Mets would connect on three straight hits in the 5th, giving Matz and the Mets bullpen all the extra support they would need. Randy Fontanez and Cody Satterwhite were very sharp over the last two innings, allowing only one Portland baserunner. Offensively, Dilson and Burgamy continued their red-hot hitting, while Taijeron and Rivera continued their merely hot hitting. Rylan Sandoval would hit his first homerun of the year, as he got a rare start at 3B.

Daniel Muno – 1-4, 2B (11), 2 SO, HBP
Juan Centeno – 2-3, 2 BB, SO
Cesar Puello – 0-3, R, BB, HBP, SB (10)

Recap:

The Las Vegas 51s were not able to overcome a wild Cory Mazzoni Wednesday night, losing to the Rainiers for the third time this series with one game left to play. Mazzoni was wild from the start, walking leadoff hitter Abraham Almonte to start the bottom of the 1st. He’d walk the leadoff hitter in the 3rd and 4th innings as well, allowing all three leadoff walks to come around and score. He looked good working a 1-2-3 2nd inning, but was missing his spots and the strike zone the rest of the game. Offensively, Matt ∂en Dekker and Wilmer Flores continued their hot hitting, and the 51s had plenty of opportunities throughout the game, they just weren’t getting timely hits. Erik Goeddel and John Church came out of the pen and were great, shutting down the Rainiers offense over the last 4.1 innings.

Will Fulmer – 1-3, HBP

Recap:

The rain could not save the Cyclones Wednesday night in Aberdeen, as the Cyclones and Iron Birds waited it out and then got all nine innings in. After jumping out to a 1-0 1st inning lead, some poor defense in the bottom half made things tougher for Brooklyn starter Casey Meisner than they had to be. After the lengthy rain delay, the Cyclones offense could not get much going against the Iron Birds bullpen, managing only a run on six hits the rest of the way. The Cyclones got a good extended effort from their bullpen too, allowing only the one earned run (and one unearned) on four hits the rest of the way. Amed Rosario continued his hot hitting, though he had a rough night in the field, which is not too concerning for a NY Penn league player.
