Recap:

Noah Syndergaard and the 51s bullpen took advantage of some overly aggressive hitters on the last day to walk away with a shutout, their seventh of the season. Thor was only to be limited to about 40 pitches Monday afternoon, so 51s manager Wally Backman chose to lift him after two innings and 32 pitches. John Lannan came in for the next three innings and pitched as well as he has with Las Vegas this year, perhaps as well as he has for any team in his lost 2014. The 51s offense finally broke through for a run in the 5th and 6th inning, but I know I wasn’t the only 51s fan who was worried when Giancarlo Alvarado came in with only a two run lead to start the 6th. Fortunately, despite being customarily wild (only 23 of 43 pitches for strikes), Alvarado was as effective as he had been all year. Alvarado left some trouble on the bases when he was removed with two outs in the 8th, but Gonzalez Germen would eventually come in to clean things up. Before Germen came in, Wally went to Jack Leathersich for one batter, who would walk on seven pitches. I don’t understand why Leathersich got the quick hook, as the outcome of this game is meaningless, but that’s Wally for ya.

Recap:

Cory Mazzoni was great over 6 very efficient innings Friday night, but the Albuquerque Isotopes came back against the 51s bullpen late to win 9-6. Mazzoni was fun to watch, as he worked ahead in the count and mixed up his pitches very effectively throughout the start. Both of his secondary offerings were very effective against Albuquerque, and he ended up with ten strikeouts on the night. Mazzoni didn’t really make a mistake until the 6th inning, when a first-pitch fastball was deposited over the fences in RF with two outs. He was close to getting out of his most stressful inning of the night, but instead gave back two of the three runs the 51s had tacked on in the top of the frame. Still, Las Vegas got one run right back and held a 6-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 7th. The Isotopes would scratch together a run off of Lannan in the 7th and then five off of Gonzalez Germen in the 8th, on two homeruns.

Cesar Puello – 2-3, R, 2B (14), RBI (30), BB

Recap:

Noah Syndergaard could not control his secondary stuff Thursday night and the 51s offense was shutdown by Isotopes starter Jeff Bennett as Albuquerque took game 1 of a 5-game set. Offensively, the 51s have been getting plenty of offense from M∂D, Matt Reynolds and Cesar Puello lately, and all three contributed two hits Thursday. They had a number of chances to score but could not get the key big hits. Erik Goeddel came in for two innings of relief of Thor and was generally impressing the 51s radio booth of Russ Langer and Jerry Reuss, although the results were not great. Zack Thornton looked very strong and needed only 8 pitches to get through the 8th. Jack Leathersich came in and ran into trouble, retiring only 1 out of 3 batters he’d face before Miguel Socolovich took over with two runners on. Socolovich would allow a runner to score before finishing the inning, ballooning Leathersich’s ERA to 27.00 with AAA this year.

Las Vegas 51s Series in Review: @Albuquerque Isotopes

With gif highlights below
Dates: July 4-6
Results: Split series
51s Record: 54-38

Recaps:

Saturday (Games 1 + 2): Las Vegas Review Journal, Examiner, Examiner

MV51: Wilmer Flores went absolutely nuts against Albuquerque – that’s a .938 ISO for the series, with 44.4% of the runs driven in and no mercy shown.
LV51: Greg Peavey struggled early and often after a strong eight-inning performance in his last start, and since the 51s needed him to log innings with a worn out bullpen, things got very ugly. I don’t know what it’s going to take to get him to bring his strong AA performance to AAA, but I’m rooting for him to keep on performing well at AA so that he’s ready for his next AAA opportunity – he was demoted to make room for Tyler Pill on the Las Vegas 51s roster.
