Recap

            Justin Marks kept Las Vegas batters stumped Tuesday night, and the Aces jumped all over 51s starter Darin Gorski for an easy Reno win in game one of this four-game set. Darin Gorski was hit hard in the 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th innings before being replaced by Duane Below, who appears to be taking over the long man role in the 51s pen. Below was very good over his three innings of work, allowing only two singles and a walk. Dilson Herrera, Matt Reynolds, and Travis Taijeron had big nights, again, but the rest of the 51s lineup was mostly quiet throughout – check out the highlights below. Jack Leathersich came in for the 8^th and worked around his first two walks allowed of the year for a scoreless inning.

Gorski came in with a 1.80 ERA and a 5.56 FIP, so one of them was in for some sort of correction. Gorski worked around a leadoff walk in the 1^st with the help of a nifty double play started by Matt Reynolds. But it was all down hill after that for Gorski, who quickly gave up the two-run lead handed to him in the 2^nd inning. He allowed a homerun to the first batter of the 2^nd, Peter O’Brien, and then a two-run homerun to Matt Pagnozzi three batters later. Reno would tack on a run in the 3^rd inning on a double from Pagnozzi with two outs, and then three more in the 4^th. Gorski allowed three homeruns on the night, which is not atypical for him. He walks a fine line, and hitters punish Gorski pitches that miss their spots.

Leathersich came in looking very sharp, striking out the first batter with a nice fastball on the outside corner before getting a fly out to RF. But then he lost control to the next batter, which quickly snowballed into two straight walks from Leathersich. He can be moving along smoothly, but once he has a hiccup it’s hard for him to regain his control. The aces would load the bases with an infield single that Matt Reynolds couldn’t handle, but Leathersich recovered to get a weak groundout to Dilson to end the frame.

Las Vegas gives the ball to Tyler Pill for an afternoon start against Reno Wednesday afternoon at 4:05 PM, looking to even the series and get back to .500. Rain is predicted to be in the area, but the game should be far enough along to count by then. Tyler Pill has run into some big innings during his first two starts, so he’ll be looking for his first good AAA start, and facing a lineup he should have success against.

Recap:

            John Gant was a strike-throwing machine, and the Gnats bullpen was just able to hold on Friday night in Rome. It’s likely he reached his inning limit for the start, because with only 67 pitches thrown, Gant could’ve gone another 2-3 innings easy. The Braves jumped on him for a run on two hits in the 1^st, though the RBI single was a 70-foot dribbler just out of Gant’s reach. Gant would set Rome down in order over the next two innings, but some defensive miscues in the 4^th led to another Braves run (although this one was uncharged). First, there was an error charged to the shortstop Yeixon Ruiz on a ball that deflected off the lip of the infield grass awkwardly – this may be overturned later. Later in the inning, Ruiz didn’t know where to throw a routine grounder hit his way, and everyone ended up safe with the bases loaded. The offense would finally get on the board in the 5^th, thanks to homeruns from Colton Plaia and Jorge Rivero. They’d tack on two more in the 6^th, including one on a bases loaded walk, and then add one huge insurance run in the 8^th. The Braves would make things interesting off of Ricky Knapp in the 8^th, but Darwin Frias came in to calm things down, stranding two inherited runners in the 8^th, and finishing the game with a strikeout in the 9^th.
