Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s won their first extra inning contest of 2018 9-6 Monday afternoon in El Paso, forcing a split in their four game series with the Chihuahuas. The 51s kept jumping ahead in this one only to see the Chihuahuas battle right back to tie it, which made for an exciting extra inning game. Both teams were playing in their first extra inning affair of 2018, which meant both teams were experiencing the new pace of play rules for extra inning games for the first time (the new rule puts a runner on second to start every extra inning). The rule had no impact for either side in the 10th inning, but both sides took advantage of that automatic base runner for a run in the 11th. The 51s were able to rally beyond just that base runner in the 11th, jumping ahead 9-5 thanks to some big hits from Phillip Evans and Luis Guillorme, and then Jamie Callahan sealed the deal with a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame.

Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s took the opener of a four-game set in El Paso 7-1 Friday night behind a great performance from starter Corey Oswalt. The 51s gave Oswalt an early lead and he gave the team a much better performance than in his first start against El Paso on opening day. After a few huge games in Albuquerque, Ty Kelly stayed hot in this one with a two-hit, two-RBI, one-double performance. David Thompson also kept heating up at the plate and is now 6 for his last 13 after starting the season in a 2-14 rut. With the win, Las Vegas has its first mini ‘winning streak’ of the 2018 season.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies dropped their second straight to Akron Tuesday night, taking a 5-1 loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. Ponies starter Joe Shaw cruised through the first five innings in this one, but then ran into trouble in the 6th and eventually allowed four two-out runs as Akron took control of this game. Ducks starter Shane Bieber also cruised through the first five innings in this one, but he didn’t run into any problems in the 6th, or the 7th. Bieber finished with eight strikeouts and just four hits allowed while walking no one over seven innings for his first win of the year.
