W: Bowman (W, 7-10, 5.05 ERA); L: Rodgers (8-5, 4.26 ERA)

Another beautiful night for baseball in Las Vegas

The Highlights:

Pitchers

Matt Bowman (W, 7-10, 5.05 ERA) – 9 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 SO, 114 Pitches (76 Strikes), 16 GO: 2 FO

Batters

Zach Lutz – 2-4, R
Brandon Allen – 1-3, R, RBI (49), SF, SO
Brooks Conrad – 4-4, R, 2 2B (12), 3B (1), HR (6), 2 RBI (37)

Recap

It was a two-man show for the 51s Tuesday night, with Matt Bowman throwing a 2-hitter on the mound, and Brooks Conrad’s 4 hits going for 11 total bases. Bowman got off to a poor start this season, with this Fresno team tagging him for 13 ER over 8.2 IP across 2 of his first 3 starts, so it was great to see him not just having success against the Grizzlies, but absolutely shutting them down – admittedly, Tuesday’s lineup wasn’t as dangerous as the Grizzlies April lineups. At the plate, Brooks Conrad was the 51s offense, hitting a homerun, two wall balls (one for a double, the other for a triple), and then going for the double in the 8th when a single would’ve given him a cycle – he’d make the last out in the frame trying to score from 2B on a single, but wouldn’t have even been in scoring position if he had stuck to the single in his AB.

Recap

Brooks Conrad got to live out a dream most baseball fans have at some point in their young life, coming up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th inning, with his team trailing. It was on the road, so he didn’t give his team the walk-off win, but he still came through with a grand slam that bounced off the scoreboard. The 51s got a wildly effective start from Rainy Lara, and some great work out of the pen from the Chase Bros., Huchingson and Bradford, to finish the series with a split in Fresno.

Recap

The 51s offense finally came out of hibernation Thursday night as Las Vegas built a big lead early, but then Vic Black’s first PCL rehab appearance went horribly wrong, and Memphis came back from a 6 run deficit to win. Las Vegas starter Darin Gorski had a typical Gorski outing, with his mistakes leading to extra base hits in 3 of the 4 innings he allowed a run. He left with a 4-run lead that would not last very long, as Black could only retire 1 of 5 batters he faced, and then Chase Bradford allowed the tying runs to score. Bradford stayed on for the 8th and quickly found himself in trouble thanks to an E5. Scott Rice would come in with one out 3 batters later, but he just allowed an RBI single to a lefty. Jon Velasquez would replace Rice and retire the final two of the frame, but the first batter hit a fly ball to CF that was deep enough for a sac fly.
The series wraps up Friday at 8:05 PM, with Steven Matz looking to end a 9-game losing streak, and the 51s look to avoid a winless road trip.

Recap

The Las Vegas 51s cruised to a victory in game one of their double-header in Albuquerque Tuesday night, scoring in 5 of the final 6 innings. Steven Matz was hit around a little more than he has so far in the PCL, but he was great at limiting the damage, and continues to impress. Surprisingly, Wilfredo Tovar, who hit two homeruns in a game for just the second time in his pro career, and Brooks Conrad, who had a 3-hit game, led the offense. Matz probably could’ve been left out there for the complete game, but with higher pitch counts his last two times out, and Jack Leathersich needing an inning of work, Wally made the change for the 7th.

Read on for highlights from the offense, and more on another strong performance from Matz below, and the game two recap should be up soon.
