Dilson Herrera Begins Throwing Program

Should be making plenty of throws from 2B for Las Vegas soon

The Mets top minor league second baseman has been limited so far n 2016 with a sore shoulder

            Before the minor league season began this year, Las Vegas manager Wally Backman announced that Dilson Herrera would begin the season limited to DH/PH duties with the 51s. Apparently he had been dealing with shoulder soreness again in Spring Training, after spending at least some of 2015 playing through it too. Well good news Mets fans! Dilson began a throwing program this week and could be back in the field when the 51s visit Fresno this weekend.

Dilson was able to play in every game during the first series of the year against an AL Triple-A team, but half of those were rained out, and he was limited to pinch-hitting duties this week against Sacramento. Wally said that he threw from 90 feet on Wednesday, and that he’ll be on this throwing program for 4-5 days. He’ll take part in full pre-game infield practice while in Fresno this weekend, and if he says he’s ready to go, he’ll be in the lineup. The 51s begin their series in Fresno Friday night at 10:05 PM

            Dilson is off to a 3-13 start in limited duty, with one double and three strikeouts so far. He’ll be re-joining an already crowded infield – Gavin Cecchini, T.J. Rivera, Matt Reynolds – shortly after the 51s are receiving demoted Eric Campbell, so I wonder if someone will heading down to Binghamton when he’s ready – the B-Mets could use an upgrade at SS until Amed Rosario is deemed ready for AA.

Recap

            The Las Vegas 51s came into the season favorites to repeat as division champions in the Pacific Southern division of the PCL, but after spending nearly the entire season in 1^st place, their loss to El Paso Thursday night dropped them a half game back of those pesky little dogs with one series left. El Paso has an extra game to play this weekend, but they have the head-to-head advantage, and they have a one game lead on Las Vegas in the loss column. This was a tightly played game for the first 4 innings, but then Wally started getting weird with his bullpen, and the game seemed to snowball out of control. You can’t blame Wally for his relievers not performing, but his bullpen management was poor throughout the series, and it left him without his ‘hottest reliever’ John Church in the biggest game of the season.

            Brooks Conrad got to live out a dream most baseball fans have at some point in their young life, coming up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9^th inning, with his team trailing. It was on the road, so he didn’t give his team the walk-off win, but he still came through with a grand slam that bounced off the scoreboard. The 51s got a wildly effective start from Rainy Lara, and some great work out of the pen from the Chase Bros., Huchingson and Bradford, to finish the series with a split in Fresno.
